Shear fluke I found the tiny doorway into a small courtyard which in turn led into another. I felt at peace here. Strange. A local walked in and asked if I knew anything about it. He proceeded to tell me about this mass cemetery where...More

Probably the only necropolis of its type in the world. Looks as it should, sombre. When you walk the ancient centre of Rouen and visit the many fantastic historic sites it all comes together rather well. This spot is a stark reminder of the hardship...More

This is an ossuary which is where bones are kept of the deceased. Apparently lots of folks died of the plague and this is where the remains were kept. The buildings surrounding the courtyard date back to the 16th century. There are a lot of...More

Tucked away in what seems like a slightly dodgy area, the Aitre is a must see if you want to get a sense of life in the Middle Ages. The explanations and displays are not good enough so you need to prepare in advance so...More

A quaint courtyard located down a narrow alley. The courtyard has a few trees and a crucifix but little else.

This was so interesting. It shows where victims of the plague used to be buried. The buildings are beautiful. Until recently they were used by a fine arts academy, a nice twist of history!

Plague cemetery! But wait, it is way cool! Take time to read the books on the site, then spend time checking out the carvings all around. Wickedly wonderful. Do not miss the 500 year old preserved dead black cat just on the left as you...More

A lot of work still goes on here, but a visit to the courtyard where mass graves were dug near the St Maclou church for, plague victims, with an ossuary above to make space for later burials. Fascinating carvings

An eerie visit to the St Maclou Atrium brought us face to face with a mummified cat and the human skeletons of victims from the plague. Bones from the 14th and 16th centuries were dug up, including those of children. We watched with morbid curiosity...More
