A lovely place to visit with a wonderful moat and extensive wild areas around. This Chateau is in the middle of nowhere and all the more attractive for that. Not an expensive day out. The place is not that well known so is quiet even on otherwise busy days such as holidays.

We drove three hours to get to the Chateau and we stayed about 2 1/2 hours. The castle is stunning. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, the visit was interesting. It is an amazing Chateau and it was totally worth the trip although I think the outside of the castle is much more interesting than the inside. I think it... More

Enjoyed our tour here. The grounds were lovely, especially in the fall with some wisps of fog. It's not visited by many tourists and privately owned, which gives it a more personal touch. Smaller in size, but very nicely kept up and contains some incredibly interesting rooms. I simply loved the water filled moat. The place just feels real, lived... More

First, a cautionary warning that you should check the times of opening on the brochure before you visit. This is a wonderful Chateau which we visited one afternoon when we managed to be the only people there so we were treated to an almost private tour. Our leader was fluent in both French and English and was very knowledgeable about... More

I visited Plessis Bourre probably 20 years ago, it is still one of the best to look at for the exterior, partly down to the moat, the bridge and the 'transition' period style of architecture - it's a transition between old castle (fortress) and palatial chateau. The interior has some amazing rooms; a fantastically decorated ceiling, an impressive fireplace, a... More

Plessis-Bourre was the first of the chateau we visited in the Angers area, and one of the best. There are rooms in several different styles ( Louis XV and Regence were my favourites), but the high point of the chateau is undoubtedly the extraordinary alchemical ceiling in one of the rooms at the top. One could spend hours trying to... More

Very pretty chateau the building of which is pretty much as originally constructed between mediaeval and renaissance in style, combining defence with comfortable living. Inside are interesting collections of furniture and art from earlier eras

After finding the Château at Angers unexpectedly closed, we visited Plessis-Bourre. A guided tour was starting a few minutes after we arrived so we took that. The château is quite unusual in having been built entirely in one period and it has been restored by its new owners and filled with their stunning collection of furniture, paintings , tapestries from... A not too long visit, with excellent explanations from the guide. Outstanding decoration, exceptional in its conception. The castle served as the setting of a cult French movie starring Catherine Deneuve. A beautiful inspiring place.

Shuts between 12 and 2pm and you can only visit with a guide. Tours start at 10.30am. We took ours at 2.30pm and takes about an hour to go around. One snag is they speak hardly any English. Although you are given an A4 size leaflet so that you can follow the tour to some extent, the tour is in... More
