A must see for students of WWI history and US military veterans. These peaceful woods bore witness to brutal fighting a century ago. Once you step away from the memorial site you can still see some of the trenches and shell craters.

This is a bucket list item for pretty much all U.S. Marines and a must see for anyone interested in WW I history. Walking the battlefield at Belleau Wood is a somber yet peaceful experience. Reminders of the weeks long battle are everywhere. Shell holes, outlines of trenches are still visible. The Marine Memorial to the 4th Marine Brigade is... More

The wife and I was to visit my daughter (USAF) in Italy during September of 2016. We knew in advance that she was leaving us to defend for ourselves during one of our weekends there. So with two weeks notice I nonchalantly mentioned to my wife (also a former Marine) why don't we try and get to Belleau Wood? It... More

We were on a 7 day bike/barge trip through the Champagne countryside of France, and encountered this memorial halfway through our bike day near Chateau-Thierry. It was a warm sunny day mid afternoon when we took a break in the quiet of Belleau Wood....allowing us to rest but also remind us of those that had gone before us. This setting... More

The WWI Marine Memorial at Belleau Wood, near Chateau Thierry, offers a quiet respite from the towns and cities to reflect on the fierce fighting that went on in 1918 to push back German forces during their last major push on Paris. Located on the actual battle site, the shell holes are still spread across the site. A small site... More

As a former US Marine, this has always been high on my bucket list. The hospitality of the staff, the superb maintenance of the cemetery and the morning fog added to the ambience. I spent hours in the woods by myself walking the trails and seeing the trenches, bomb craters and Iron Mike statue. The highlight of the visit is... More

In the woods of Belleau is a series of geocaches so we went there to search for them and the walk took us to some beautiful places we would not have seen otherwise.

The site is truly amazing. The staff there are extremely helpful and speak English as well which is helpful. They give great guidance on where to go and how to get there. An absolute must for Marines traveling in France.

Young Germans and Americans died here by the thousands, and are buried here in the thousands. It is moving and chilling to see the ground that cost so many lives in such a brutal war.

While in Paris, my son who is a Marine, asked if I would mind skipping a day of museums and go to a very hallowed spot for all Marines. He wanted it for his birthday which was in a few days. I sighed and ordered a car to pick us up. This was one of the most beautiful spots I... More
