The company who run Le Petit train de Provence are called Les Chemins de Fer de Provence, a private company with no connection to SNCF. Seemingly this train trip also has another name, "Le Train des Pignes", which comes from the pinecones, once used for tinder to start the steam engine's fire. The Petit Train de Chemin de Fer de... Having done the Train des Merveilles this was slightly disappointing. It was double the price for a return journey (€35 each) and it was quite bumpy. It was a wet day so the Windows fogged up and we couldn't see out for the second half of the outward journey. The scenery was beautiful but as we'd already seen similar scenery... More

I chose to just go half way on this train trip as I wanted to return to Nice on the same day and yet spend time in Entrevaux. If you catch the earlier morning train you can travel the full length of the train to Digne-Les-Bains, spend a little time and return the same day but since I had to... More

We had a wonderful day out from Nice by catching the Train des Pignes from the station at Nice (one stop up the hill on the tram from the main SNCF train station, Gare Thiers). We went to Entrevaux which takes about 90 minutes and the journey is extremely picturesque but a bit bumpy in places. You travel alongside a... More

Access up a river valley through gorges to Entrevaux which was the fortified border between France and Savoy. Also some of the year to a steam train ride. Also one can go on up over another pass to Digne. All in all a good day out in the Maritime mountains.

The Train few Pignes does not run along the coast, it goes inland. The normal SNCF trains run along the coast.

We took the train from Nice - Monaco - Cannes - Nice. the journey was awesome and picturistic. There are few tunnels, sea side and mountains the train pass through.

I'd tried to visit this railway in the past, but unluckily I misjudged the timings, so this year I tried a local trip as far as Colomars, very basic one car train, but a cheap ride out of Nice to the banks of the river Var. It was a nice ride so the next day I got up earlier to... More

This train ride was one of the non forgettable ones in our travel history. But it is not the train that is worthwhile talking about, the train was old noisy and the tracks were not smooth nore comfortable. The scenery from the train was amazing and time could be well spent talking to one's partner, or in my partner's case... More

Can't believe how short sighted this service is -- pretty much renewed all their rolling stock in the last two years -- Look at the Photo, modern comfortable BUT NO provision for carrying cycles on a train that links Nice to an area perfect for cycling , I have asked if I turn up with a bike frame in one...
