We traveled to Toulon on a cruise ship and then took a daytime walking tour of the old town and other parts of the city. We enjoyed ourselves but could not help but wonder if we should have taken the little tourist type train that we saw going around many of the same places we were walking. We decided oh... More

Toulon is a subtle charmer, multi-faceted, yet simple in an elegant way. Here you'll find Naval Bases, Universities and a cosmopolitan hub with wide tree-lined avenues and cafes, museums and parks. While it enjoys a Mediterranean climate, if you wish, you can visit Aix-En-Provence or Marseilles in about an hour or high-speed train to Paris for a long weekend. Toulon... More

We walked several different streets in Toulon to get to different attractions. We liked the uncrowded, clean, pedestrianized streets, some wider than others, with nice paving. I thought Rue Emile Zola was very nice with its hanging baskets of annuals and attractive facades of apartments with shutters and French balconies. Rue Algers was a good shopping street to walk on... We took the "Petit Train" from the waterfront which took us all over the town. We visited the old town winding through the narrow streets which gave us an insight into life early on.

While this is not one of Europe's bests markets, it is unique that it is an actual market and not just for tourists. Walk the back streets and have a friendly coffee!

toulon was the first port of call on our recent barcelona-venice cruise on HAL. in general, we find ship excursions to be rather costly; and, since we have been to marseilles before (70 km from toulon) and also to eze, we decided to tour toulon on our own. as the title suggests, the old town is a walker's delight! the... Absolutely nothing to do here. It's not often that you can say that you can have a better time on the ship than at the port of call.... but this is it. Toulon, France is not the place you want to be. 14 cruises and I've finally found the worst place to visit.

Considered a very small old town. Many tattoos restaurants can be found. A nice place to walk and relax. D"If in Nice don't miss it.
