Enjoy history and glaciology It takes about twenty minutes to climb the 1,000 metres up to the Montenvers-Mer de Glace attraction. Simply hop on board the famous little red railway train. Time will stand still, and you’ll enjoy this vintage method of transport. The track climbs the mountainside, running through the forest, tunnels cut through the rock and over viaducts. You enter the realm of the high mountains, and round the last bend you’ll feel the magic: you’ve arrived at your destination at the foot of the famous Mer de Glace glacier, at an altitude of 1,913m. A stunning panorama opens out before you, with the glacier below, an excellent testament to the climate change in this day and age.

The train can be used for all sorts of experiences including visiting the ice cave, commencing high level walk, using a guide or experienced climbers to descend onto glazier via multiple ladders

The trip up and down from the glacier are worth while for the spectacular views of Chamonix. The train is comfortable and winds it way up from the town to the top where there is a good café and shop. If the weather is satisfactory...More

Very sad to visit the Mer de Glace, with the global warming, the ice level is dramatic. It seems that every year stairs are added to chase the ice... visit sould be stop, it's quite exhausting for young and old people.

This review may seem unkind as nature can't be controlled, but unfortunately the glacier has shrunk so much over the last twenty years that it does not have a wow factor. It just doesn't compare to others we've seen in Iceland, Canada or Norway. Many...More

Well the train ride is fun and has some great views, and the view from the top of the glacier is incredible, €31.50 is too expensive. The glacier is cool but there's not much to do - you can easily do a day hike (2...More

The train goes up and down from the station in Chamonix. We have used it several times to bring us down from Montenvers at the end of a hike from the midway second of Aigulle de Midi. The station at Montenvers has a newly built...More

Our day off after a few days of trekking. Nice place to recognize the glacier inside. Also very nice views of surrounding mountains.

I know the glacier is the main attraction but actually the train is great fun. I think getting the train to the top, going to the cafe and gift shop and getting the train back would be enough. However...the glacier is the attraction. You should...More

Still it would be great! The train tour is scenic specially around this time of the year. She can enjoy a cup of coffee at the restaurant while others go and watch the ice caves.

It doesn't take that long on the train but it's a walk to the mer de glace. I will say you should be able to do it in 2 hours it all depend on when and what time you get there (high season mid day is the busiest)
