Purely amazing that this ancient roman theatre is still in such excellent shape. It was unfortunate that we had very bad weather when we were there.....cold, rain and with snow - couldn't stay too long to enjoy this amphitheatre. We took the train up the mountain, very exciting. The driver drove so fast along the hilly, narrow, winding road -... More

One of the treasures and must see stops in Vienne is the Roman Theater. Built about 45 CE, this wonderful theater is still in use today for plays and the ever popular, summer jazz festival. In its early life this was likely one of the largest Roman theaters with seating perhaps for 13,000. Well worth the minimal entrance fee. Spend... More

This was a wonderful experience. The Theatre Antique is an 8,000 seat Roman Amphitheatre on a hill overlooking Vienne. It has a modern outdoor stage but has left untouched the original theatre seating...so you're sitting on ancient stone benches as you watch a show. We were there in July on a Brand g river cruise (Brand g Vacations does wonderful... More

A must see roman theater that is still being used. It has all the elements of a theater: Monymental back drop, seatings and back of theater.

A surprising find in this lovely city on the Rhone river. It is well preserved and still functional. This is where the famous jazz festival is held and there are other events throughout the year. Well maintained and provides a very interesting sight during your visit to Vienne. Above the theatre on the hillside is a viewing area that gives... More

The Roman theatre in Vienne was built around 40 to 50 A.D. and housed upwards to 13,000 spectators. At the time, it was the largest in France. Nowadays, the stone amphitheatre is the home for plays, opera, and jazz festivals. In a way, it's a shame it hasn't been preserved in its original state for its architectural significance.

We had to seek this out amongst the back streets late evening but received a very warm welcome from the helpful guy on reception. For minimum euros we were allowed full access amongst the restored amphitheatre with its tunnels, steps and stage. Slightly marred by the Jazz stage but no doubt this must be a stunning venue for that type... More

Just back from the Vienne Jazz Festival and saw Nile Rodgers and Chic at the Theatre Romain two nights ago. At first glance the venue is a bit intimidating (our ages range from 21 to 75) and I wish we had seen the advice to arrive earlier. But the night was brilliant. This venue is superb, as is the rest... More

We took a mini-tram to the top of a hill, which is the best way to get to it. A difficult walk and drive otherwise. Had a great view of the amphitheater and surrounding areas. Well worth the visit.
