This is a neat gate to see and cross through as you walk over the bridge. It is easily accessible from the Marketplatz.

The Heiligenberg, old bridge gate, is located at the southern end of the Carl Theodor Bridge. The city gates were built in 1788 alongside the old bridge and was formerly used as a guardhouse and jail.

These tall scroll like sentinels are stunning. They say 'Heidelberg' from a long way off and seem to guard this toy like city.

Walk the Hauptstrasse and enjoy nice shops and restaurants. If want to eat book in advance or arrive early... before 18:30. Go to the castle it has a great view. At the side of the caste is a fantastic park in the hill, you can do a nice treking in the forest.

The gate is at the entrance to the city off of the old bridge and a must stop for anyone visiting Heidelberg.

I was on a tour bus and we went to the top. The views are really great. Its a beautiful spot and the valley below looks like it is from a postcard. Would love to come in the winter.

First of all, I see some confusion in other reviews. Heiligenberg is a MOUNTAIN not a bridge. The Alt Brücke (Old Bridge) some photos and reviews indicate only takes you to the right side of the river to start climbing your way to the top. That said, this is the best thing you can do in Heidelberg. You will need... More

There are many routes up the mountain. A map (e.g. on your phone) helps a lot. The woods are pretty and their are some viewpoints along the way. At the top there is a strange Nazi era amphitheater and ruins of an old monastery, but not much in the way of views. A convenient walk of a couple of hours... More
