A city that is surrounded by the alps

Wherever you go, you will see the alps as the backdrop for the city. Suggest you walk along the river, cross over and walk up the slope. The view will get better and better.

When choosing a home base for a week's worth of day tours in Bavaria and Tyrol, we landed on Mittenwald's Altstadt for it's storybook charm, central location and authentic Bavarian atmosphere. 16th century Hotel Alpenrose was the right choice near the foot of the Obermarkt pedestrian zone and iconic 14th century St. Peter und Paul Church. Mittenwald Altstadt provides the... More

Traveling through Upper Bavaria and after visiting Garmisch -Partenkirchen and Oberammergau we ended up in Mittenwald prior to cross the border to Austria. You might think of it as just another one beautiful town with painted house facades and church but it has to offer a lot more - nicely located between two mountain chains, options for hiking and climbing... The decorations on the buildings are interesting. The pedestrian area has a stream running through it. There are inevitably touristy shops, but good bakeries and restaurants.

Walking down the pedestrian zone is a pleasure--especially for your eyes. The street is full of very old buildings that have been painted with scenery, happenings in daily life as well as historical events. There is a little stream running down the street which seems to give pleasure to many people. Since there are no vehicles one does not have... More

What a wonderful little town! There is so much to do in Mittenwald! We were there for 3 days and wish we had stayed longer. Lots of places to hike, shop, museum, restaurants, etc. For two days we were the only Americans we heard and we really loved the feel of this German town.
