An abundance of Classical objects and more gold that anyone can possibly imagine!

Located on the south side of the plaza, the works of art are housed on three floors. The day I visited, however, the second (first in Europe) was closed. Most of the objects are... read more

Located on the south side of the plaza, the works of art are housed on three floors. The day I visited, however, the second (first in Europe) was closed. Most of the objects are in cases but be forewarned--the labels are in German for the most part, although a museum app and media guide in German and English is available.... More

You may be a little surprised that an important but relatively obscure museum was on my bucket list. The reason is simple - 3 of the 16 Greek Vases I have taught as part of the New Zealand Classical Studies curriculum are held in a room in this museum (the other 13 are found in 7 other locations around the... The Glyptothek and the Antikensammlungen face each other across the Koenigsplatz. While the Glyptothek probably gets more notice, this other museum is essentially part of the same collection of classical art. The Glyptothek holds the statutory while the Antikensammlung holds all other objects. These start from Cycladic art, through Greek vases, terracottas, bronzes, Etruscan and Roman objects. After a good... More

The Museum of Antiquities houses the Bavarian State collections of ancient art including primitive and classical Greek, Roman, Etruscan and others. It is an absolute jewel of a gallery. The museum had a superb special exhibition of Etruscan art when we visited. Many of the items on display pre-dated Rome. Etruria occupied a large portion of western central Italy and... More

Once you see the building you are hooked. The history and everything about the building is amazing. If you have time to go in do it. We were on business so getting time to go in was not happening. I did ride to the door and saw for a second what looked amazing. The only disappointment was I could not... More

Very interesting collections of Etruscan Artifacts. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the museum. Nicely displayed.

This museum holds such beautiful Etruscan art along with Roman and Greek treasures. It is amazing how much they have. Be sure to rent the audio guide as it includes a tablet with more pictures and great information. Well worth the 4 Euros. Both museums for one price. They also have a lovely cafe.

The building complex consists of two buildings: first is Glypothek with great collection of antique Greek and Roman sculptures; the second is museum presenting the Greek ceramics (ground floor), jewelry (cellar) and everyday items like mirrors, knives etc. which all are amazing works of art. I recommend to spend additional 4 euro for media guide for both museums (or you... More
