My wife and I visited here at the weekend. It's obviously a "must see" and important part of Berlin's history but it wasn't really a highlight of our trip. We had a look around and had our photos taken with some guys dressed in US Army clothing and holding flags (3 euros per person for the privilege of a few... More

Checkpoint Charlie has a lot of history and some great informational parts to it along the route from the Berlin wall to the checkpoint. The actual checkpoint is is a major tourist trap and I would recommend the Berlin Wall Memorial over the checkpoint if you don't have time for both.

This museum is fascinating but there is tonnes of information which becomes a little too much, if truth be told. Tickets quite pricey too even with the Berlin Welcome Card discount. Gift shop fab, though!

Well worth a visit. A very thorough history of the era that once divided this city. Wheel chair access is not as good as it could be. Many interesting unique and compelling artefacts from the Cold War era. The museum is a little dated and the signage needs improving as you don't really know where to go first It is... More

An important memoir of the cold war. Its a trip down memory lane to see the little white hut at the former border and the legendary sign telling that "You are leaving the American Sector". At the corner of Zimmerstrasse and Friedrichsstrasse you'll find a little free exhibition showing the development of the border through the years and the fate... More

Quite unbelievable that this was where the powers to be decided so many peoples lives, where families and friends were torn apart and it continued for nearly 30 years. The way it has been preserved with the close proximity of the museum and the various other remnants is a testament to Berlin, so many stories and a wealth of information.... More

Staying in Kreuzberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Kreuzberg
Berlin's revolutionary heart and immigrant roots can both be found in Kreuzberg, but this central neighbourhood is beginning a new chapter. In the 1950s and '60s, Turkish guest workers settled around Kottbusser Tor, while in the 1980s and '90s, rambunctious squatters and artists gathered to live a carefree life here. An old hospital even became a hotspot of riots between squatters and police. Today you can still find the best kebabs in town and many underground clubs, but a lot has changed as well. The hospital has been transformed into an art center, and increasingly you will find new urban cafés, restaurants and designer shops. Rising housing prices and gentrification threaten the spirit of this area along the Spree River, but the neighbourhood’s legacy is upheld by a very engaged community fighting to preserve its rebellious identity.
