The monument itself is beautiful but the location and experience was a bit strange. It is right in the middle of the city, overlooking the American embassy. We went on a weekday, out of peak season but it was still super busy. There was also a protest going on outside the American embassy, with some pretty graphic imagery which made... More

The area and structure is truly magnificent. A must see when you are in Berlin. Very close to the government area which is also worth a visit after plenty of photo opportunities.

We visited this grand structure a couple of times. Not much to do there but to reflect, while gazing down Unter den Linden, at how much 19th and 20th century history transpired from this point.

Amazing display of architecture, loads of history with the surrounding buildings too. There was a protest on when we went and we saw very organised polizei dealing with it. Highly recommend viewing. The surrounding area is also steeped in history and things to see plenty of places to stop for a drink or bite to eat too.

Lit up with a christmas tree behind, it was just stunning and a must see on an historical trip. Very busy location by day, so we returned at night ad were not disappointed.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
