The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of German division, located in the middle of the capital. Situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it extends along 1.4 kilometers of the former border strip. The memorial contains the last piece of Berlin Wall with the preserved grounds behind it and is thus able to convey an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. The events that took place here together with the preserved historical remnants and traces of border obstacles on display help to make the history of Germany's division comprehensible to visitors. The memorial is part of the Berlin Wall Foundation, which also includes the Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum, the central site dedicated to the history of flight and emigration in divided Germany.

Visitors to the Berlin Wall Memorial who have a smartphone or a tablet computer with internet access at their disposal have the opportunity to select an individual tour of the memorial grounds for themselves on the memorial's mobile website berliner-mauer.mobi.

Its' hard to be in this place without feeling really affected by history. To understand how ex neighbors, friends, etc once got divided, how close the west actually was to the wall. And the risks people were willing to take to get across the wall. Worth visiting.

A walk along the East Side Gallery is a must! The street art on the wall is outstanding. Hopeful, optimistic, gloomy and critical in equal measure.

Wow this place was fascinating. You can't help but read every single montage. So much history and events that should never be forgotten. So much sadness was endured by so many.

I spent a few hours walking along the Memorial of the Berlin wall, reading the signs and learning about the history. The Berlin Wall has such a important historical/cultural/social/etc. influence on how Berlin is shaped today - I would highly, highly recommend walking along the memorial for an hour or two. Everything is outdoors (with the exception of the Documentation... More

There is much more of the wall remaining then I was lead to believe. Parts of the wall and monuments to this blemish in Europe's history are located in other parts of Berlin also.

Would definitely recommend visiting the memorial of the Berlin Wall! It is very interesting and informative. It is also free entry and close to checkpoint Charlie.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
