We visited St Hedwig's to listen the regular Wednesday afternoon (3:30) organ recital. A large and impressive cathedral, there was ample room for seating, and the organ playing was magnificent. The organ itself is an imposing feature of the cathedral and has a majestic and rich sound which fills the space with surprisingly little echo. The program was Bach and... More

Saint Hedwigs was the first catholic church built in Prussia after the Protestant Reformation. Modeled after the Pantheon in Rome, construction started in 1747 and was completed in 1773. We spent some time sitting on its pews around noon time and enjoyed these very peaceful, quiet moments.

Went to mass here on 10.2.16 as it is located near the Brandenburg Gate area and our hotel. A great piece of architecture next to the OPERA which is being totally rebuilt and expanded. Worth a visit to say a prayer for the world and family. the Doctor 10.2.16 Hit me with a helpful vote.

St Hedwig’s Cathedral which is the Catholic church built by King Frederick II. The church was built after the reformation and is modelled after the Pantheon in Rome. I guess everyone wanted a Pantheon in their city.

St. Hedwig's is the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Berlin so I was somewhat surprised that, unlike The Berliner Dom (the Protestant Cathedral), it was much less ornate than I had expected. In fact it is, in comaprison, quite simplistic visualy. The stillness resonates a peace that you don't always find in such buildings. Historically it is rich but as that... More

St Hedwig's is impressive in its simplicity for a Catholic Church. Others have mentioned it's interesting history, so will not go further with that, but I felt it was well worth the visit. Inside it is a place of peacefulness, minimalism and holds a beautiful oculus, pipe organ, and altar.

This is a good 1/2-1 hour activity if you're nearby, or if you're catholic and want to catch mass. It is architecturally interesting, modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. The layout is interesting and unique. The interior is rather intimate (for a cathedral). It is interesting historically, built by permission of King Frederick II to serve the catholic immigrants to... More

Cathedral of St. Hedwig, in Berlin, is the Berlin Catholic Cathedral. Not to be confused with the Berlin Cathedral, which is protestant. The fact that Germany saw the election of Pope Benedict XVI so shortly ago, the catholic cathedral is not a monument to pass unnoticed to the catholic visitor. Its interior is beautiful for its bareness, and surprising for... More

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
