We arrived at the beginning of Kollwitz Strasse and walked towards Kollwitz Platz. On the way my husband spied two gentlemen seated outside a shop eating coffee and the most perfect looking piece of cheese cake he had ever seen. So we were on a mission to find the cafe that had supplied it. As we walked the urban landscape... More

We happen to love European street markets and the Saturday Kollwitzplatz market is worth a visit to the Penzlauer section of Berlin. In addition to produce, flower, and meat vendors, there are also stalls offering ready-to-eat food. Or, make your own picnic -- I would strongly recommend the pastrami, bouletten (meatball) and other prepared meats from Gafron -- delightful staff,... More

This was the nicest and most cosmopolitan are we visited in Berlin. Lots of good bars and restaurants within a classy neighbourhood.

Even my 20- and 23-old girls said this was the best in three days of Berlin. Some of the "farmers" were from abroad and therefore it was easier to manage in English. However the people going there are German which makes it really interesting. The area is really nice and worth seeing but the best of all was Brazilian Andrea... More

We passed the pleasant Kollwitzplatz several times during our stay. We went to the thursday market (mid-september) and even if it was rather small it was very good (especially the vegetables).

This area is a wonderful, quiet oasis of green with lots of very nice bars and restaurants around. You can see lots of people cycling and families playing in the park.

Fantastic neighbourhood with lovely parks (lots of playgrounds for children of all ages) there are lots of lovely restaurants that cater for all tastes around. It was the nicest neighburhood for eating out in that we found in 2 weeks in Berlin. Lots of shops and a market every Thursday and Saturday that has a range of items and lots... More

A beautiful little square, with a central park area, and lots of pretty restaurants surrounding it. A walk in Prenzelauer Berg is always a good choice, and we somehow ended eating around Kollwitzplatz almost half of the evenings we were in Berlin :) I love this part of the city and this square. This is a must!

I have been here twice for the farmers market. It is very nice for an hour or two. A nice variety of meats, fruits, veg and other handmade items. I will return again on most Saturdays. Plenty to see in the neighborhood afterwards as well.

Staying in Prenzlauer Berg

Neighbourhood Profile
Prenzlauer Berg
No Berlin neighbourhood has undergone a greater change than Prenzlauer Berg. The artists and non-conformists that defined the district’s intriguing subculture in the 1980s and 90s have been replaced by a young, hip crowd that frequents the many cafes. Where there were once run-down houses in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, there are now designer shops. Beautiful old homes have been modernized and renovated, and on Sundays, thousands turn the park next to remnants of the wall into a playground for street artists, musicians, and flea market shoppers. This attracts young urban families who enjoy the balance of big city life and small-town comfort. Meanwhile, trendy, young, upper-class visitors from all over the world are attracted to the local high-end shops, cafés, and sophisticated bars and restaurants. The merits of this transformation are a favorite topic of debate around the city, but it makes for some of the best people-watching Berlin has to offer.
