Grippers, bales of rubber, coffee-sacks, sampling implements: The Speicherstadtmuseum is located on the ground floor of a red-brick warehouse that is over a 120 years old (in the authentic surroundings of the dockland warehouse district in the former free-port). Here typical goods and tools collected from traditional warehouse companies and business premises of the warehouse district are exhibited. Historical photos and maps/plans illustrate the changes of over a century in this worldwide unique historical monument. Further topics are: coffee- and tea-trading as well as lighter-boating (supplying the warehouses with goods by transport on cargo barges). The engaging and interactive exhibition emphasises the skills and ingenuity of the work of warehousemen.

How do they get away with calling this a museum? Seriously. One dusty old room with an open floor plan and a few antiques. A few paragraphs written only in German. Yup, that's it. No maps, videos or interactive displays. No drawings of spices plants....More

Great building! The Coffee & tea information in the museum is fascinating and laid out to encourage touching some of the items. It's worth walking around the whole warehouse district - but bundle up on windy, cold days.

This museum had very interesting write-ups on the history of the port, especially the coffee trade. In fact, most of the exhibits revolved around coffee. Upon purchasing our entry tickets, we were asked if we needed English translation. After going through the museum, we drank...More
