About
The extraction, processing and utilization of mineral geo-resources, subsumed here under the term ‘mining’, is a subject with great significance for the development of human civilization. The global importance of mining is increasing today, and will no doubt continue to do so in future. This is clear from the political campaigns and the intense media reactions associated with issues of raw material supplies and shortages, and also resource conservation (recycling and the use of renewable energy sources). The work of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, as the leading international museum on the mining industry, takes place within this socially relevant context. As one of the Leibniz Association’s research museums, the DBM is devoted to investigating the extraction, processing and utilization of mineral raw materials in the context of social, cultural, ecological and economic dynamics, spanning different historical periods. The museum shows the lasting impact which these processes have had on the development of society, and preserves relevant evidence for future generations. In short: The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum is the cultural memory of the mining industry.

It is an excellent museum, very well documented and with very interesting objects, videos and pictures. It is just too much, so you have to be selective in what you want to see. The art selection I found less impressive, but overall it was a great experience.

A must see when visiting the Ruhr Valley. Interesting and historically accurate. Not ideal for small children or people with walking disability.

The museum will take you on an historical tour through German (and other parts of the world) coal mining. In the main building with 3 floors you can see miniature working models of how mining has been through time. Informing you of how different aspects of mining was solved: How to pump up water from the mines, how to secure fresh air, how to stabelize the mineshafts and how to get the coals out of the mine. The permanent exhibitions will also tell you about the coal miners daily life, organization, health and safety. Under ground (visitor mine 20 m below the museum) you can see how mining has been done through time from using a hammer to using modern machines. A lot of machines are available to see and touch placed in sceneries matching their operation. If you take the guided tour (approx. 40 minutes, 3 EUR extra) the guide will switch on some of the machines to give you a feel of noise and let you hold and operate (but not drill) with the handheld compressed air operated hammer. A simulated ride with the pit descent simulator to 1200m below surface is a thrill. Every intersting spot has an button operated speaker telling you about what you see and how it was used in either english or german.
No problem visiting with small children. Wear suitable footwear if you go to the visitor mine. Finish the day taking the elevator to the top of the top of the tower and get a nive view of Bochum from above.

Very interesting museum. A lot of original equipment on display. Guided by people who worked with these machines, the tour was bot enjoyable and interesting.
It will help a lot if you understand German.
This has been a training place for decades and you will spend a quit amount of time. You will have to walk a lot, it is not a good place for disabled people.

Recommend it, still in development. Its going to get even better when the permanent exhibitions will be finished. The underground part was really interesting and the view from the tower stunning.

In this museum,
-There are some tunnels underground which you can see the equipment and machinery for coal mining there, simulate things like an elevator, other facilities like info desk, phones(so cools ones), The vehicle for transporting coal miners, rest spot and even their clothes
- Discount on the ticket for student and children
- There are several tours for different places by former coal miners. The tour costs money based on duration but it is only in the German language.
- Signs are both German and English
- It took us more than 3 hours to visit it even some of the tunnels were closed and some parts were under construction.
- There are plenty of parking lots nearby
All in all Highly recommended visiting especially interesting for children.

Be aware if you plan on visiting a few things:
1) As of Jan 8th, 2019 the Museum is under construction and there is only one small area open for viewing.
2) The museum information and the tour are only in German - there are no translations.
Tour wouldn't be good for young children - you descend about 17 meters in an elevator and take a tour showing evolution of coal mining industry. Lasts about an hour.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but even for this American with limited German speaking capabiliy found the musuem very interesting. It's acutally a working coal mine that closed in 2000. You drop 500 meters into the mine and walk around the tunnels where mining equipment is stored and operation explained.

If you don’t know anything about the miners and their work- after your visit you will see a lot clearer!
A visit here is exciting and very educational. Everything is shown very clearly!
