The Kolumba is an art museum located on the site of the former St. Kolumba church, that was destroyed during WW II.
The museum building incorporates remains of the church wall, and the church excavations can be visited as part of the museum tour.

Only a few works are in permanent display, the others are regularly rotated, and late antiquity / medieval works are displayed mixed to contemporary pieces. Most of the works have no explanations attached, but a booklet is provided with the ticket with descriptions.

I personally think that the antique / medieval works are extremely beautiful, and I would rate them with a five star. The contemporary pieces are questionable to say the least, and I would rate them with one star: this is the main reason why I rated the whole with three stars.

I went and was limited to what I could see. But from what I could see, I was impressed. Pretty impressive place. Got some great information and pictures.

Walking around the streets just of Schildergasse is a thing I love to do,the different architectural styles amaze me,a mix of modern and old blend seamlessly together, the damage this city sustained during world war two was devastating but post war rebuilding projects have left us with building such as the one that houses Kolumba ,a museum,I never visited the museum but I was took by the beautiful and unique architecture, the main entrance is superb, well worth checking out if your in the area and easy to locate along Kolumbastraße.

Have to totally agree with the many negative reviews written; why is it that the staff follow you around? I’ve never seen so many staff in a museum who watch your every move; it’s awful - please stop it!

Signage is poor and there’s little labelling of artefacts (which needs to be in multiple languages). Pamphlet is boring and difficult to follow.

Don’t go until they improve it.

Some reviews suggested it was a must-sees museum. So beg to differ. Despite its large exterior it is a quite small museum with only the ruins in the basement and two floors of exhibits. The Columba plot was completely lost in a mish mash of 20th Century home appliances and meaningless modern art. Most of the artwork was eminently forgettable. Signage was poor and it was sometimes difficult to match the exhibit with the poorly produced guide pamphlet. There was no attempt to explain or label what you were viewing in the basement ruins. The entrance fee was only €5 but I would not have visited if I had known the contents before entering. You may wish to visit the interesting adjoining chapel free of charge.

Kolumba is a small museum. Though it is well maintained, there is not much to see. Expecting more in next visit.

The architecture of the building is interesting as it attempts to integrate the old church walls. You can enter 2 small chapels on one side, 1 has interesting stain glass windows and the other a wall with modern sculpted stations of the cross, plus a view of the archeological diggings which are worth doing and all are free.

However if you pay to visit the museum you will be given a guide book which is tiny print and only in German. The collection is a complete mixture of items which seem totally unrelated. There are no labels on items to explain anything about it. There are domestic items from an early age, 1950s possibly? or who knows what age mixed in with abstract sculptures and some religious items.

It is totally confusing. You have to climb lots of steps but there is a lift which is not clearly indicated. Everything seems to ensure you have a disappointing experience.

Quite amazing to see the extensive excavation work occurring and the operational wing of the church is beautiful to see also.

Sadly there was no exhibition during our visit so no opportunity to es retained beneath the modernist construction.see the gallery spaces. However the skill of the architect and builders to superimpose this building on such a site is magnificent. Wonderful old remains of the mediaeval church

usually I am not so interested in old religious art-itemds - but this makes it different : careful selection of only a few highlights per vitrine in gold, silver, some sculptures - including some modern counterpoints. This makes you focused. Next to it, somehow integrated : also the remains of an old church. Special museums experience !
