The city's huge main cathedral is over 1,000 years old and contains the tombs of several of the city's archbishops.

The Cathedral is in the main historical centre. It is Romanesque with a surprising six towers. It was started in 975 and consecrated in 1009.

If you visit Mainz, you have to stop here to soak in some history. Also, the square has a lot of shops and restaurants and often times, there's someone playing some music. Check out the Cathedral, then grab a table outside, enjoy a local wine,...More

This Cathedral is 1000 years old. Unfortunately like many large buildings in Germany it sustained damage during bombing in World War II but it has been beautifully restored.

One of a series of 11th century cathedral churches in the Rhine valley and like the others magnificent (others are Speyer and Worms). Cool, spacious and impressive with a lovely cloister attached. A space for thought as well as for admiring the art and architecture.

This is a large, impressive Romanesque cathedral. Perhaps most interesting is the adjoining 10th century (prayer) chapel off to the side - very unusual that such a chapel still exists. Don't miss the adjoining cloister - that is exceptionally beautiful and peaceful. However the cathedral...More
