The museum is located on the banks of the Rhine in the castle of the Elector. It is very interesting. The idea of its foundation was quite good - Mainz has the very rich history, including even during Roman epoch. In principle, something preserved here from the Neolithic period, although there are, of course, much more artefacts of local history... More

I enjoyed my visit to the museum. I like Roman history and visited the Roman theater and the ancient shipbuilding museum before coming here. The museum is free of charge. Inside, I found plenty of Roman artifacts found in the region. The signage was in German. From some of the windows, I had a nice view of the Rhine River.... More

Lots of fine artefacts of interest to those with more than a casual interest in the classic Roman era. To attract a broader public a more modern display style is advised.

What I appreciated most about this exhibit, spread over two floors of a nineteenth-century building, is that it gives a good overview of the ancient Roman empire in Europe and especially in the area of present-day Germany. It is mind-boggling to see how effectively and efficiently the ancient Romans conquered and administered vast swathes of Europe--the areas now belonging to... More

The museum is free of charge. I had difficulty because I know very little German so I was unable to read the exhibit descriptions. There were definitely interesting objects on display. This museum wouldn't be my first stop in Mainz but worth looking at if you can.

Luckily this museum is free of charge. The items on show are interesting, but sadly enough the old building doesn’t lend itself to this kind of museum. Note also that there are a lot of facsimiles, but these are not indicated as such.

Not the best museum I have been to but worthwhile to have a walk through when you are visiting the area, no entry fee. Some Roman ruins, you can donate at departure.

This museum is for free and there is a lot to see. There are a few people from the museum walking around and even asking you if you want to put your jacket into a locker. Furthermore, the museum consists of two floors. It is really organized. If you are in Mainz and you do not want to go shopping... More
