It's been cold, it's been snowy, it only makes you feel a tiny bit more how inmates must have felt during this terrible regime. Though not many buildings are left, there's a lot of information available. Came here years ago and am glad the place still remains the gates open. It is a definite must visit if you are around... I had to ask at the entry gate if we were allowed to go through and into the camp. In a way it didn't feel right. Talking didn't seem right either and I was pleased that everyone walked around quietly and respectfully. I didn't take many photos. The huts of the inmates had gone long ago but the crematorium with... More

Begin your visit with the half an hour film ( try and time your visit so you get the timing right as tou can't enter after its started). It's in Gernan with English subtitles. Then do a lap to the right of the gate and work your way to the museum. There's not much left of the camp however there... More

While I did not visit the camp in its entirety this site is very sad (what I mean is a heavy presence) the museum still had kohler generators on display from the fence line, little kids shoes on display, personal belongings, gold caps/teeth. There were pictures on display from the Nuremberg trials. Upon approach of the site while the day... More

There are quite a lot of facilities here including a cinema, café & a hotel attached with facilities for study etc. Embedded in the camp's entrance gate is "Jedem das Seine" which means "everyone gets what they deserve” or more literally "Each to his own". The visitors center complex is adjacent to the car park with a short walk from... More

Caught the bus 6 from Weimar Hauptbanhof and cost €2 each. Be aware that bus 6 has two destinations we took 9:48 which ends at the camp. Trip took 15 minutes only. Camp opened at 10 am. We caught the 16:25 bus back to town so had a full day there. Pick up a plan to ensure you see the... More

This is a very sad and emotional place of human cruelty and suffering. It is very well guided in different languages. The place is settled in a very nice nature. It is easily reachable by bus No. 6 from Weimar main train station. It has toilets, and just outside the camp is a hotel with a restaurant. There is no... More

Visited here not knowing how I would feel like so many I guess but I would have to say coming here is a must to anyone visiting the region. It is a testament to man's inhumanity to its fellow man. Some of the sites make you wonder how cruel people can be. I was moved being here and take it... More

buchenwald is a bleak experience. The setting is beautiful, the memorial stunning and the exhibits very sobering. Take the time to read the well put together exhibits. Take your kids and have conversations about racism, belief systems, nationalism, etc etc.

Attention: this is NOT an attraction. If you are a visitor and/or tourist without direct involvement don't go. You'd just waste your time. If you are interested you'd find millions and millions accurate and even unbiased info, pictures, videos on the Net. When you go there you'd see a few (almost) empty (although unfortunately pretty well preserved) buildings, mainly barracks,... More
