The church is the only one that we visited in Weimar and it was in many ways spectacular. There is a giant altarpiece by the Cranachs, the grave of Herder, the side altars with graves of the Weimar princes, all splendid. This is a historic church in which Luther preached and Bach performed his newly composed music. The church is... More

The painters were in whitewashing everything so plain white. Detailing picked out in gold, the altar and a few memoria so ornate. The altar pieces are the draw here and are very intricate. The over riding impression is wow that's white.

A stunning interior currently being decorated in white and gold . Also a temple of Protestantism ! The Cranach altar piece , also currently under restoration , features a lot of the people who were important in Weimar,s history . Also the burial place of Duchess Anna Amalia , who was much responsible for creating the cultural greatness of 18th... More

Lovely square where this church stands. We enjoyed our walk through the town and coming up on this church from different angles as we strolled through the beautiful alleys

There were a lot of people visiting this church because of the celebration of Cranach this year so it was difficult to commune with the altarpiece, which is a masterpiece. I found this church rather odd as the architecture is not cohesive. The standard Lutheran form with balconies this time had the balconies painted bright pink with red for the... More

This unusual church is tucked into back streets off the centre of town but it well signposted. It is unusual in that it has a bright pink balcony around the sides. The altarpiece is also unusual in that it reminded me of the cloth of gold event in Tudor times. The painting seems out of historical context as you have... More

Visitors who came to see an important altar piece started by Lucas Cranach The Elder in 1552 and his son The Younger who completed it in 1555, were disappointed by the the sign next to the copy, notified the visitors that the original altar piece is currently under restoration. Not only that, the church interior was under the major renovation... More

This fascinating building was being renovated when I visited. The whole place became alive when we participated in the service taking place.

The staff were friendly and well-informed. The most detailed printed guide is available only in German. We did buy a guide book in German but would suggest that for foreign visitors not fluent in German, an exact English translation would be appreciated. We appreciated that the altarpiece was on exhibit even though the interior of the church is undergoing restoration.
