The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a main reason for me to visit Mallorca, especially for the hikes that can be done here. There were good bus connections from Palma, so I could start at one point and get picked up at another. In mid-December with fantastic weather I was mostly by myself.

There are plenty of beautiful footpaths, often a bit stony as usual in the Mediterranean. One walks through pine forests, past olive groves and around Soller it is full of citrus trees. Everywhere one can see the agricultural terraces built of stone, and encounters fincas and hamlets with traditional architecture. There are views of mountain peaks, like the Puig Major, or of a rugged coastline. Several compact villages offer themselves for separate visits like Valldemossa, Deia, Soller, Fornalutx, Biniaraix or Pollença.

We did 2 walks in 1 day out of Valldemossa. Puig de teix to Puig gros. Then Mola de sa comuna - Coll de sant jordi.
Amazing but challenging. Definitely download a map. We used AllTrails app.

i cannot say enough great things about the Serra. I chose to drive from Palma to Andratx to Banyalbufar to Deiya to Soller! This road trip out does the 101 in California for a couple reasons: 1) the scenery is equally as spectacular 2) the traffic and speed are super reasonable - this time of year. Cyclists passed me and i passed them. Heard that in the summer, the cyclists can be quite busy and cause issues with hills and curves.
Tons - and i mean many - multi - mucho - opportunities to stop and take pics and just chill. there were a couple scenic bars that were unfortunately closed due to off season.... i don't know if i could handle 3 or 4 beers and this drive too.....
Es Grau looks awesome! this may require a return visit!
The drive along the coast easily took me 4 hours with stops.
The return from Soller to Palma along the expressway through the tunnel was less than an hour door-to-door.
I hope that future travelers enjoy this jaunt as much as i did. I think that summer here must be in my plans if not only to complete this again.....

We've driven across the plains and around much of the coast of Mallorca but the true beauty of the island is to be found on the west coast and the Serra Tramuntana mountain range. The little villages of Deia, Valldemossa and Fornalutx are a world away from the east coast resorts- they could be on another planet! They can be appreciated for their location, the surrounding mountains are stunning and often surreal, and their history and Mallorcan culture. The smaller coves along the mountain route are picture-perfect and the waters crystal clear (Ben D'Aval, Costa Deia..). After Deia follow the mountain road through the Soller Valley and Fornalutx then head up towards Pollensa, being sure to stop at one of the bar restaurants along the route for stunning views, tapas and freshly picked and squeezed oranges, and at Lluc Monestary for an interesting museum stop, a dip in the Monestary's cool blue mountain pool for just €2 and more refreshments before heading ever higher up Puig Major, tunneling through the mountains, for some of the most beautiful scenery ever.

Most visitors to Mallorca will be heading for the beach and sun. Great---but the mountains of the Tramuntana range are even better--absolutely stunning. Cyclists travel from all over the world to test themselves on the narrow mountain roads---Mallorca is a cycling paradise. The limestone rock that forms the Tramuntana range offers incredible scenery--wild high mountains. Walking can be difficult, due to the vegetation, known as carritx, and sharp rock but the rewards are amazing sights and solitude. Good paths are relatively rare and numbers on the hills/ mountains relatively low. Good guides and maps are available. Soller is at the heart of the range but it is possible to make use of 'package deal' coastal resorts as a base to explore the mountains. In the south Sa Ponsa is a good base, whilst Cala St Vincente, Puerto Pollensa and Allcudia are possibilities for the north---indeed good walking can accessed from these three northern resorts----on foot. A regular bus service runs along the north coast from Can Picafort through Alcudia, Peurto Pollensa, Pollensa and on to Soller via Lluc. Whilst not frequent it is reliable and on time. Car hire gives more flexibility---indeed for many just driving along the stunning mountain roads will be thrilling enough---try the road down to Sa Callobra. Other ways to access the mountains include the train to Soller from the south---another incredible journey.
So if you want to see a different side to Mallorca, try the mountains of the Tramuntana. Suggested walk---The Arch Duke's Path from Valldemossa. Not to be missed: Sa Calobra, Cuber reservoir and Lluc. Sadly the highest peak is off limits--its hosts a military radar---but if you are fit with plenty of hill walking experience you will be spoilt for choice; Massanella, Teix, L'Ofre, Puig Tomir just to name a few. Enjoy

Luckily we got good advice from a tour organiser and she recommended this tour. Essentially it is a Bus, Boat, Tram and Train tour of Mallorca covered in a day. The tour company we used was "World services". It costed 60 euros per person and covered all the tickets.
The tour starts in a bus and then you visit a Leather emporium in Inca town. After this break you start your journey of the Tremuntana road pass which is nicknamed the "Snake Road". One piece of advice is to travel on a light tummy and dont have heavy breakfast before you go on this journey. Also if you have road sickness, pls be aware there are some nasty turns.
The bus takes you to La Colabra which is the iconic Canyon where you can click some nice photos and have your lunch. Again go light on the lunch especially if the sea is rough as you next embark on a boat ride to Port Soller.
Port Soller is really wonderful place. You get about an hour to spend wandering the streets. We wished we had more time to explore this charming port town. Then onto a Wooden Tram which is very interesting but can get very crowded as it is a huge tourist attraction. This ride brings you from Port Soller to Soller town for your train journey to Palma. We got down at a station before Palma where our bus was waiting to take us back to out hotel.
This tour covers some of the varied terrains of Mallorca and is very scenic.

If you are a DIY kind of person then there is a Return Train & Tram combo ticket which you can buy and then you take the train from Palma ->Soller->Port Soller & back which might be cheaper and you can explore the places at your own times. We had a little one so we opted for the organised tour.

I've been all around the Mediterranean but nothing beats Serra de Tramuntana for sheer beauty. What a magnificent coastline! It is well worth driving down from Pollenca and taking the road through the mountain range south to Soller. There you can go for a wander in the town before heading further south through the mountains again towards Deia and Banyalbufar etc. Awesome.

Let´s go straight to pros and cons, since I got which such mixed feelings about this tour:

Pros:
- Beautiful scenery
- Old charming train
- Nice cosy village (Soller)
- Nice cosy harbour (Port de Soller)
- Free Museum with Miró works in Soller's station
- Easy to find your way around the means of transportation
- Very friendly staff
- Enough to fill a whole day
- The tram's seats are reversable, so you can always travel facing forward

Cons:
- Very expensive (32EUR train + tram return tickets)
- Too long sitting going from A to B, not so much time at the stops (I read somewhere that the same ride with the bus is half of the time, and cheaper)
- Good part of the train journey is litterally in the mountain, that is, in the tunnels
- It is kind of a tourist trap, so expect a lot of bad behaved tourists
- You have to choose in which train you are coming back to Palma, that is either at 2pm or 6pm
- The first 20 minutes, more or less, is across the suburbs of Palma, so no beautiful views there. The next 30 minutes is on people's backyards going up the mountain, not that interesting either. The last leg of the trip is descending the short coast of the mountain to the village

It is a nice ride, no doubt about it. If you are a flatlander, it is tottaly worth it. I was not awed, having a lot of (much nicer) valleys and mountains from where I come from, but in a beautiful day it is worth it.

If you want a window/good seat, ARRIVE EARLY!! I arrived aroung 9:15am, one hour before departure. Was one of the first to buy the ticket and one of the first to board the train.

I got tired of just sitting in the train and tram. 1h20 min form Palma to Soller, than only half an hour there until the 12pm tram, which takes half an hour down to the harbour. Then I had to take the 1pm tram back to Soller, to be there in time to be on the 2pm train back to Palma. So I didn't have time for more than a short stroll in both places.

I gather that the 6pm train is always full, and that is why I havn't chosen this one. The trams as not always on time as well.

If you have a car, do it by yourself. You can still go to the train station to see both train and tram if you wish, and you can go on board while it is there.

If you have hire car in Mallorca and want a good day trip then take a circular drive through the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains for some breathtaking views with beautiful villages and small towns. I recommend driving from Andratx to Port De Pollenca on the main "coast road' via Banyalbufar, Calldemosa, Deia, Soller/Port de Soller, Lluc then Pollenca. Alternatively you could do this the opposite way round. The way back is to drive from Port De Pollenca to Andratx on the main roads and Motorway. It takes just over an hour on but the coast road will take most of the rest of the day.

I suggest stopping in Deia if you can find a parking place and have a wander up the steep climbs to the church which has great views or if you do not wish to be this energetic then try one of the small cafe's on the main road. You may have to park just outside the village and walk in.

The next stop should be Soller and/or Port Soller. If you fancy something different you could take the old tram between the centres of these villages.

After this head towards Lluc/Pollensa and you will quickly climb to some of the highest points on the road. If you fancy a good traditional Mallorcan meal you will find Mirador Ses Barques (see my review of this place) on the left side of the road with a large parking area on the front just as you go around a tight right hand bend. Even if you just stop for a quick drink then take in the spectacular views of both Soller way below and the mountains above.

After this you will pass a large reservoir just after the highest point on the island, Puig Major, which has a peak almost a mile above sea level. Its part of a military zone so you won't get any closer than the main road.

Carry on to Lluc which has an interesting Monastery.

The town of Pollenca is very mountainous and if you can find the centre of the town via the narrow lanes then you will find a pathway up many steps (100+) to the main church with more spectacular views.

In our view Port de Pollensa at the Northern end of the route is the islands most attractive seaside town and if you still have time then the the ride up to the old lighthouse which overlooks the bay and the Med for more spectacular far reaching views.

This will provide a very long and busy days. Alternatively split the journey into two days, first via the main road from Palma to Soller via a long tunnel or avoid the tunnel and take the switchback road over the mountains. This gets you to the same place but probably adds an hour and you will need a strong stomach as there are over 50 hairpin bends on the route. You can then head north or south and split the above journey over the two days.

Either way you won't regret it but make sure you leave enough time to take everything in.

Not for the Feint hearted!!. I have driven this route several times and every time presents a different challange. Visited in the quite period this week, and given mild weather cyclists have begun hill training and motorbikes are out in force. There are several ways to access these beautiful drive and ill do my best here. My personal preference is from the north of the Island which will be grreat for those staying in places like Pollensa and Alcudia. Those in the South or East have 2 choices. Drive the MA-11 from Palma Centre towards Soller. Here you will pass the Caberet show Son amar, very worth a visit, but a bit pricey. Then follow signs for Escorca. But please visit the port of Soller it is Breath taking and a MUST SEE!
But for me the best route from both the South and the North/East is via Inca. There is one main road running South to North, the MA-13. Think the M1 but far more scenic!! Turn off at Inca and follow signs for LLuc pronounced i think as LUL. Once you reach here follow signs for Soller. Along the mountian ranges there are several places to stop. At the very peak you will find the old but still in service distillery/bar where they filmed "mad dogs". But for me the one to visit is on the decent towards Soller and near to Fornaltux, a large bar/restaurant with stunning views across the mountians to Soller. The roads are full of viewing points and the 2 best are when you go through the 2 tunnells and reach the lakes ....ENJOY
