This was my 3rd visit to Atlantic Sailing with the objective to get to RYA Yachtmaster level. In 2 weeks we were intensely trained above the required level, so passing the 12 hour exam at the end almost came natural - well, it was still very demanding, but I was well equipped by Richard with the necessary skills to get the hand shake at 10pm ! Richard has the rare gift to challenge you just a bit out of your personal comfort zone, while giving you confidence of your existing skills, resulting in a steep learning curve. After the 2 intense weeks my wife and 2 friends joined for a private training week. We are scheduled for a Croatia sailing trip and I wanted to skill them up and see how we would function as a team. They loved the structured training, the atmosphere on the boat and Richards competence & patience. With plenty of "let's do this again" we ended the week with three very "RYA competent crew" - what else do I want as a skipper!

Atlantic Sailing is the right school in the right place with the right people on board. I had a great experience starting from booking the training slots up until the last day. VERY PROFESSIONAL team.

I had two weeks, starting with RYA Competent Crew in the first week followed by RYA Day Skipper in the second week. All was great. I salute Atlantic Sailing team for the great value they provide in their package.

I would like also to give special appreciation for instructors teaching the course. Thank you Emily and Richard for your professionalism, care and knowledge you have provided during the training.

Highly appreciated.. Highly recommended.

I’ve done my first ocean (Biscaye) crossing with Atlantic Sailing. 1000 Nm in 2 weeks as part of a mile builder program. This was the first time for me to do a 3 hour night watch for several days in a row. My challenge was to plan, execute and weather routing for bigger crossings. Calculations and planning went well. All within a timeframe of 3 or 4 hours max. So cool. Richard challenged me in many ways. It was not my first coarse with them, Earlier, end of 2019 or so, I did my RYA coastal with Atlantic Sailing around Lanzarote.

Richard, it was such an honour for me to do my first Biscaye crossing with you on Yalla. Quite serious conditions when crossing;-). You challenged me. Learned a lot (yes, again) and am sure I’m a better sailor now. ‘Should I stay or should I go’. Safety first. Clip on! Be on time. Know were you are. Don’t estimate, know for sure. It was a fantastic trip with nice extra’s like racing The Solent. Wow. Life will never be the same again on the IJsselmeer now, need more space! Thx for being a mentor and a friend.

We learnt to sail with Richard and Fadwa last year . We then improved our skills by taking day skipper and coastal skipper exams with Atlantic sailing too . We have now just chartered our own yacht in Greece ! Watching supposedly “experienced” sailors trying to moor and breaking all of Richard’s rules has shown us we trained with the best . We have had people tell us we did an excellent job of mooring and anchoring and being honestly gobsmacked that we have only been sailing a year ! Every time we have this we say “ we learnt from the best “ we could only recommend Atlantic sailing If you want to learn to sail . BTW we are both just 60 and had never sailed a day in our lives ! Never too old to learn !

My wife and I took a two-week course with Atlantic Sailing, in Lanzarote, Spain during Mar-Apr 2022. We completed our Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew (first week) and Day Skipper (second) qualifications. In summary, our experience with Atlantic Sailing was excellent. Please read on for the details.

Sailing is the “practical” part of the course, but that is not all. There is also the planning and the theory. Fadwa, the School Principal, handled all contacts, answering our questions promptly and knowledgeably. She guided us through the preparations for the Day Skipper and VHF Radio theory courses, as well as the transport and other logistics. We were very happy to meet Fadwa in person in Lanzarote—she keeps the school ticking with a positive, can-do disposition and a quick smile for all.

The Canary Islands have amazing sailing conditions: Sun, blue seas, and wind with heft and personality. The instructors (Jane, for our boat, and Chris and Richard for the other) were amazing: super experienced, nice, interesting people that transmitted their skills and love of sailing to us in a very competent manner. Jane not only taught us how to sail the boat, but also how to function as a team. The ships were in very nice shape and the food was excellent. Atlantic Sailing took care of us really well.

Our navigation took place on the south-west coast of Lanzarote, mostly during the day, although we did some night sailing too—very pretty, under the stars. We slept in our boat, anchored in various marinas, where we had access to well-appointed bathrooms and showers, as well as bars and restaurants.

We are a couple in our early sixties—I am Argentinian, my wife is Italian. We shared our boat with two other crew. For our first week, an Australian ambulance jet pilot living in Germany, and an English sailing instructor who has spent much time in Canada and is looking to get back into sail teaching. For our second week we had two lovely British ladies whose families sail often. Our sister boat had people from Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. The students attending spanned different ages, had interesting backgrounds, and came from all over the world. Not only was the course amazing, but we made some great new friends too.

This is me, the Italian wife writing. For me, learning the fundamentals with Atlantic Sailing has been more than excellent. I had never stepped on a boat in my life. Before going to Lanzarote, my husband and I completed the RYA online courses for Day Skipper. Theory though, does not prepare you for the impact of being on a boat in the Ocean. I am in wonder of the way our instructor Jane was able to teach me, a real and complete beginner, the use of the different ropes (mind you, rope is not a word in boat-language; every single one has a different name), to feel the direction of the wind while at the helm and understand how to work with it, how to use different navigation instruments, and a long list of other tasks needed for sailing safely. This is not all, a very important thing I learned about sailing is that you sail as a team. Our instructor was able to teach us all—having different levels of sailing experience—how to function as a team and progress to organize a day of sailing!

So, what next. Well, we now need to build on what we have learned. Once we have acquired a bit more experience, we plan to come back for the next step. In our case, that would be the Coastal Skipper course.

We cannot recommend Atlantic Sailing enough. This is a super professional school, run by extremely nice people who worked us hard . This adventure has left us with fond memories, great new friends, and allowed us to discover something (for us) novel and challenging we can enjoy as a couple. Thank you so very much, Atlantic Sailing.

We joined the yacht Yalla as a couple and had an amazing time with Richard and Fadwa. Richard helped us improve our sailing to a whole new level (day skipper and competent crew) and Fadwa took care of all the organisation and teaching in the background. Both yachts were comfortable to stay in as well and we were provided with more than enough food for the week. Highly recommended.
