This fascinating area is steeped in history, with city hall located in the same spot where kings once reigned. You'll find narrow streets and squares here, with Gothic mansions, museums, historic churches, bars and restaurants. The Placa del Rei is reputedly the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed Columbus after his voyage to America.

The Old City (and the Barrí Gotic) are my preferred types of destinations within: Perfect for wandering and discovering, walking the history of time, and seeing it preserved and repurposed for the present. Whether you seek great dining, authentic, crafted souvenirs (or of the kitschy sort), ducking into cathedrals and other historic relics, or just freely wandering and absorbing the... More

When I'm travelling my top three 'must haves' are cleanliness, good location and value for money. This lovely little hotel had all of these and more. Helpful, friendly staff and a relaxed, safe atmosphere. The room was a good size and the bathroom was exceptionally clean, as were all the communal areas. We had an issue with the safe in... More

These streets lead you in many directions and each street has buildings of interest with shops, cafes, bars, sights and museums tucked away. Worth just walking without a real aim in mind, and just turn and follow any street then double back. It will certainly reward exploration.

Head down into this old city area and be prepared to wander and get lost or even go around in circles as you explore the laneways, cafes and placas.

Lovely area to visit and get lost in the winding streets. Follow your gut and just get lost, find a nice cosy bar in a corner alleyway and voila.

Staying in Barrio Gotico (Barri Gotic)

Neighbourhood Profile
Barrio Gotico (Barri Gotic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighbourhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.
