The abbey and its surrounding area is beautiful. We arrived in the early morning when the clouds had not yet parted, so the abbey was hidden away from us for some time; however, as the clouds disappeared, the abbey impressed. We took advantage of a hike to the cross situated across from the abbey; though the hike was worth it, going there was mostly uphill, so definitely was a bit more strenuous than walking on a level path. It was well worth the hike though, as the views were spectacular. We also had a chance for a quick view into the abbey where we saw the Black Madonna and another mini-chapel. As it was a guided tour, the time allowed to visit was quite abbreviated. For those looking to visit, recommend taking the train, as it will give you more time to spend in this beautiful area.Visited September 2022Written 18 January 2023
- Lex KieferLos Angeles, California1,517 contributionsStunning MontserratIf someone asks what heaven looks like, Montserrat might be one of the places that is close to it - beautiful, peaceful, quiet, and panoramic. We went with a tour bus, so it was a lot easier, but there's also public transportation to get there as well, which is by train and a gondola up to Montserrat. It's a monastery and a school for choir boys, in which they have to live on campus. This place is where you can see Black Madonna, which is well respected and protected by Spaniards. When you're inside Montserrat, every corner is beautiful, every building is rich with ancient architecture, as if it were heaven. If God lives here, I think he probably feels comfortable! If you are in Barcelona, don't miss this place, all you have to do is plan your trip well with time. Another stunning place.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 February 2023
- jamesAnchorage, Alaska2 contributionsNice day trip from BarcelonaWe went on our own on the train from the Espanya station in Barcelona. It makes a very nice day trip. The natural setting is spectacular—much more impressive than I imagined based on photos. The two funiculars that run from the abbey are closed for the season, but there are still several hikes you can make with beautiful overlooks of the monastery and the valley far below. The lines at the abbey were very confusing. It was not at all clear where to go if you wanted to visit, as there were a few separate queues, and we ended up in the wrong one more than once. We did not realize that you can make reservations online for the boy’s choir and the black Madonna. Make a reservation for 12:15 for the Black Madonna, so you will finish in time for the choir performance at 1:00. There is no charge, but you need to make separate reservations for each on the official abbey website. Since it is off season, we were lucky to get in without reservations, but you should not count on this. With regard to transportation: as several reviews have mentioned, it is very easy to get off one stop early if you are taking the cogwheel train instead of the cable car. They don’t always announce the stop! In fact, this happened to us. We accidentally got off at the “Aeri” station. It turned out well, because we then purchased tickets for the arial tram and enjoyed it very much. We went up on the aerial tram and came back on the cogwheel train. The only downside was the 30-40 minute wait to board the tram. I would definitely recommend not coming back on the aerial. It is on the second train stop, which means standing room only on the train back to Barcelona! Even if you take the aerial up, take the cogwheel train down. Sit on the right side for the best views.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2023
- James MLakeland, Florida714 contributionsGo for the day!! So much to doWhat an incredible place; take the train to the top of the mountain. We had a short visit and wish we had more time you could spend the whole day there. The cathedral was great, but it will close from 10:30am-noon (mass) and may not open again until 1:30 pm. Food and shopping are available along with local vendors on the strip.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2023
- Ian JBridgend, United Kingdom50 contributionsWhat an experience….!!!!From the train journey from Barcelona, to the funicular journey to the top, this experience is one not to miss. The brave amongst you might try the cable car journey instead. The Basilica is stunning and the views to die for. The audio guides are a must and visitors are advised to touch the Madonna’s right hand. We only did a small portion of one of the available tours. It would take days to complete them all. Energetic visitors could either walk or cycle to the top. An amazing experience.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2023
- jakaria a8 contributionsMust do day trip to heaven in the monutainIt was wonderful experience to visit there by train and cable car. Breathtaking views everywhere even if you do not enter the Abbey or the museum. You can spend hours just enjoying the views or hiking nearby. It should be placed as top must do activity if you visit Barcelona.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2023
- permia40,645 contributionsMonks continue to reside, since its 1025 foundationArriving on the first cable car in the clear blue sky morning gave superb vistas of the mountain and approaching Monastery, in stone not dissimilar to the background peaks. It was marvellous visiting such a revered holy place. A lovely courtyard is surrounded by Abbey buildings. Great panoramas, upwards to the mountains and down to the valley, were memorable. There was no queue delay in visiting the Black Madonna. Afterwards it was delightful to spend time in the great Basilica.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 April 2023
- Eaton_OutGreenville, South Carolina593 contributionsA Barcelona Must-SeeWe visited Montserrat as part of a large bus group from a cruise ship port call in Barcelona. Montserratt is about a one hour drive from Barcelona and largely on winding mountainous roads. Founded in the 11th century, this is a working monastery with about 80 monks. We were told to not speak to the monks if we saw them, hence our feeling that this was not what we were expecting. We enjoyed our visit, and were astounded at the age and size of this place. However, it was not what we were expecting. We were allowed to visit the cathedral during services to see the "Black Madonna" but other than the brother conducting the service we did not see monks. The brothers have turned this into a miuti-million dollar tourist attraction. The crowds were large. Parking is at a premium. Views are spectacular.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2023
- Ann W24 contributionsWonderful stay and just 40 min to the airportWe stayed at the hotel next to the monastery our last night in Barcelona and drove from there 45 minutes to drop off our rental car and fly home. The hiking trails are great, the hotel restaurant was a beautiful setting with an arched stone ceiling. There are hordes of visitors at the monastery so it was nice to be there in the quiet of the evening once they were all gone!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 May 2023
- crusaderccGeorgetown, Texas833 contributionsYou'll want to spend more time than you haveWe spent three hours here and were barely able to take in the highlights. The Abbey, of course, is stunning inside. And the views from the mountain are picture perfect. We did a short hike but definitely wished we could have spent more time and hiked farther and explored some of the other buildings here.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023

We had an amazing visit to Montserrat and would highly recommend it. First of all I would recommend watching YouTube videos ahead of time just so you are prepared since it is somewhat complicated to get there.
Initially we signed up for a tour but all they were going to do is pick us up and drive us there. The cost structure makes no sense and was not cheap by any means. So we did it on our own which was not difficult. The R5 train leaves every hour from Plaza de Espanya and there is a ticket booth downstairs from the main floor specifically to sell tickets ahead of time. I would recommend getting the Trans Montserrat ticket which was 45 euros. It included everything but the cost of the boy's choir. It takes about an hour to get to the base of Montserrat then you catch an amazing cog wheel train up to the monastery. About 1/3 of the people on the train were not able to get on the cogwheel train initially. While they bought tickets for the R5, they did not buy a ticket to for the cogwheel train to the monastery nor the funicular from the monastery up the mountain. Fortunately, the ticket collector was very nice since people were in panic mode. There is a ticket machine, and he was helping them get their tickets. The train waited for everyone which again was very nice since it leaves every hour. I would recommend you buy your ticket the day before just in case there is a line at the ticket booth at Plaza de Espanya since if you miss the train, you are hanging around there for an hour.
We hiked for about an hour which was more than enough for us. Definitely wear appropriate shoes since there are numerous areas of loose rocks and rock stair which fortunately have a rope to hang on to. Not a great place for those with acrophobia but the views were spectacular. This was for the Sant Joan funicular.
The boy's choir was ala carte and well worth the price. Their voices were angelic. Multiple areas to eat and the prices were expensive but not Disneyland sort of expensive. We caught the train at 816am and were back in Barcelona by around 3pm so it was a long day. Loved every moment of it and would without a doubt return again. Enjoy.

We have been coming to Montserrat for years, but now in addition of the 10 euro parking you have to pay extra ticket to access the Church unless you are Spanish resident ! Isn’t it special ?
We use to come to light a candle, this is now becoming a very expensive candle !
It reminds me of me a special part of the New Testament, when Jesus come to the temple, wasn’t it something about the merchant… history repeating. Sad
Any comment ?

The monastery is located in a very cool place. Parking costs €7. We didn't buy a ticket to enter the monastery, so we enjoyed the surroundings of the monastery. There are several viewing platforms and a large courtyard in front of the monastery, which is free to enter. If you are already going there, I recommend hiking in the mountains, the trails start at the monastery.

A beautiful place and the cablecar up was brilliant. Nice sandwiches in the cafe and the furnicular up to the top of the mountain was great too.
Such amazing views although sadly it was rainy and grey on the day we went. The ticket options were a bit confusing and it wasn’t clear which queue to get in for what. Overall worth a visit but the train back to Barcelona was chocca and we had to stand the whole way back which after all the walking was exhausting

Fun side trip from Barcelona. We drove ourselves but there's many options for public transportation to get here.
It's very pretty though the fog was intense at 10 am. Don't expect to get any good pictures until the fog burns off.
The Basilica is beautiful but there are so many beautiful ones in Spain. We really liked their multitude of chandeliers but I can't remember anything else particular to this one.
Now to the hike. They give you a list of hiking itineraries (also available in English). Do not take the 5th one. You say, "Oh, I hike all the time and it says it's medium. Under two hours. Great!" We said that. We've hiked in Yosemite and the Badlands and other famous places and also go about a dozen times of year to local mountains. We're both in excellent health.
We missed one of the trail markers (we thought we were supposed to go to St. Joan's hermitage first but the trail off is just before the hermitage) and ended up doing a difficult loop. Once we found the trail, hurray! Back on track. No. The trail is very steep and is all made of loose rocks and deer poo. You are sliding every fifth or sixth step. I'm clumsy so I expected to be in fear at all times but my husband is a mountain goat and I heard him slide a couple of times. (He had walked on ahead because he was tired of waiting for me while I was just trying not to wipe out two miles from civilization.)
Hiking Itinerary 5 boasts about its beautiful views. They aren't. They are nearly the same as what you see from the top of the funicular. I was waiting for breathtaking (after we finally came down from the pebbly part of the mountain) but it never really changed. You just zigzag down the face of two or three mountains but you're looking in the same direction. Not worth it. Especially because there's very little shade and the Mediterranean sun is beating down on you the entire time.
We still beat their estimated time but we were pretty hot and miserable afterwards.
Take a slighty easier route and pay attention to the signs (which are few and far between).

Wow! Caught the train 🚂 from Barcelona, then started hiking 🥾 up the hill. 168 flights of stairs. The walk is challenging and you need to rest regularly. The trail is well marked but to find the start of the trail you need to be prepared. Once you are at the top you are rewarded with some of the most amazing views. Then the train back down the hill was a welcomed relief. No one on the hiking trail but many people at the top. This is a must if you have a spare day in Barcelona.

We got the rack railway up to the Abbey and admired the buildings and stunning location. We then the Sant Joan funicular up to the top to see the site from a different perspective and look at the impressive natural landscape. More than worth taking a day trip to this site.

I paid a visit here in the middle of August. If not for the beautiful views and serenity while hiking up to the place, I'd say that it wasn't as exciting as promoted.
When one reaches the monastery and its surrounding areas, there are again lots of tourists, restaurants, shops - so, the spot feels way too commercialized.
The entrance to the monastery is not free whereas tickets can only be bought online: at least, I couldn't find any ticket offices and their security staff shared QR codes with the web link. For some events you're supposed to buy tickets in advance - e.g., to see a short performance of the choir. Inside the monastery there might be long queues on the way to the St Mary's statue - an average wait time was ~20 minutes.

This basilica is exceptionally beautiful. You can see the wonderful Black Madonna, the crypt, it's fantastic courtyard, and the side passage containing hundred of lighted candles. The outside has a lovely facade with a beautiful huge square to it's front. The courtyard is equally resplendent with huge entrance doors, and numerous wonderfully carved figurines above it's archway. Inside, the altar is amazing with the Black Madonna taking centre stage high up in the distance. The altar is adorned with numerous paintings, lots of gold leaf and a lovely dome ceiling. Not to be missed.

The choir sings every day at 13:00 in the Basilica. It is very crowded, you need to get there early. They shut the doors 10 mins before the choir starts. The performance lasts about ten minutes.

No one was checking people at the door, as they do at the Vatican. However, I’s sure respectful dress as described above is appreciated. What I found disrespectful was the number of people taking selfies with the black Madonna.

It is a stunning road! We went in our rental car at about 8:30 am on a Friday morning in May. It was empty. Plenty of parking. In fact about 3 or 4 other cars only when we got there. Try to beat the crowds who arrive at 9:00 by cable car and public transport. When we got back at about 15:00 after climbing the mountain, the parking was full but not crazy cramped like the horror stories I read and believed. In fact, the whole experience was an absolute breeze. Don't believe only the negative reviews. Of course I have no idea about parking a bicycle, but the info office was super helpful. I am sure they would answer any questions if you phoned or sent an email. A motor cycle would be perfectly fine too. You would love the road if you have a motor cycle and go really early. Enjoy it. My husband LOVED the driving experience.

Montserrat is absolutely beautiful. You must plan to spend several hours here, as there are other small chapels and views to enjoy. Please bring good walking shoes and an extra bottle of water or two. There are food vendors and a restaurant and bathrooms. Lots of walking up and down small hills. Enjoy.
