Nice big square with some interesting sights and a good point to go into Madrid in different directions. Very central point.

Extremely busy square with lot of people and movement. Here is the statue of the bear - the symbol of Madrid. Besides the statue in the square there's nothing else to do.

Good Starting Point for Exploring Madrid
Feb 2020
We started most mornings here, beginning with a visit to Las Mallorquina for a warm, sugary torrija. It is an excellent starting point for exploring the city, being only minutes away from Gran Via, Plaza Mayor and the San Miguel markets and 10-12 min walk from the Royal Palace. In the other direction, it’s 15 min walk to the Prado and 15-10 min to El Retiro Park. There’s a metro exit in the middle of the plaza also.
It is noisy, touristy and crowded and admittedly there are an awful lot of human statues, but it really is a beautiful space. The sweeping curve of creamy white buildings and iconic Tio Pepe sign made me love it.

What To See Here:
i) Tio Pepe sign – the famous neon sherry sign of a guitar-toting sherry bottle wearing a sombrero has stood in the square since 1936
ii) Bear & Strawberry Tree Statue – an ancient symbol that is the official city crest of Madrid today. We were puzzled by the idea of strawberries growing on trees but in fact the strawberry tree grows madronos fruit, an edible red berry (tastes like figs apparently)
iii) Mallorquina –selling pastries and traditional cakes since 1894. Sooo good.
iv) Statue of King Carlos III – pretty typical man-on-a-horse statue of the much-loved king who reigned 1759 to 1788
v) Casa de Correos (The House of the Post Office) – this is where people gather to wait for Queen Isabel II’s clock and bells to ring in the new year from the top of the building
vi) 0 km sign – this sign marks the centre of Madrid and the point from which all roads radiate. Look for it in the pavement in front of the Casa de Correos.

One curious thing that we noticed is plaza’s name. It’s named ‘Puerta’ (gate), not ‘Plaza’, yet there’s no gateway to be seen. Intrigued, we looked it up and it turns out that there once was an ancient gateway into the city that stood here until 1510.

Huge square
Sep 2020 • Family
This huge square is indeed very sunny and I must admit, a bit unusual with it's kind of triangular shape. Surely one of the places to visit during a Madrid stay.

Ground zero
May 2019
The very centre of Madrid: a must see. All sorts of free performances take place daily in the plaza. The Calle Mayor (High Street?) starts from here, as well as several other street scattering in all directions like the spokes of a wheel. There is a spot marked on the floor for the zero mile mark: Kilometro Cero.

I like the exit from the metro, that pops up right in the middle of the plaza.
