The area
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Nice plaza
Nov 2018 • Couples
Plaza de los Carros Madrid is a nice plaza with a lovely fountain. There are many little cafes and restaurants around in the area and there is a really nice atmosphere. Also seating is not a major problem as there is a low stone fence right around which is perfect for visitors to rest on if they do not wish to go to any of the eateries. There is also a church at the square, the Iglesia de San Andres which is worth visiting.

Fun little square with lots going on
Mar 2016 • Solo
I really liked this little square and sat for some time watching the world go by. Many of the other larger squares do not have seats (so you have to by a drink) but here the stone walls provide lots of choice.

Young and old seem to come here and I sat next to a couple of guitarists practicing ( no performing allowed).

Nice stop on the way round to the palace.

A Very Busy Plaza
Dec 2013 • Couples
In the Latina Barrio, one of the main plazas is the Plaza de los Carros and this is a busy plaza with many people all the time. In the past a long time ago, this was the plaza where merchandise for the market arrived on carts (carros).
