There are some great hikes starting in Pescassèroli, Opi and the Barrea lake area. It's hard to spot any bears nowadays (15 years ago there were still 300 bears - now there are only around 30-40 bears left) but tourist information usually seems to know where bears can be spotted. Definitely bring binoculars if you want to look for bears.

Easy to reach from Rome without a car. Trains leave Tiburtina every 2 hours to Avezzano and are about 7 euros. From Avezzano you can buy bus tickets to Pescasseroli [the town in the heart of the park] for 5 euros, either on the bus or at the bus station in Piazza Kennedy (right outside the train station). Not a... More

The area of the park include high mountains, lakes, woods and little towns with a typical flavor. Sulmona is a nice town with its central street cover with small stores with the typical Confetti made in form of flowers, dolls etc. One of the small towns with beautiful views in Barrea with the lake and the mountains cover with snow.... For an area synonymous with nature, the three national parks of Abruzzo,Lazio and Molise , comprise a bounty that has rewarded us every time we have visited. Two thirds of the park is covered with beech forest, unbroken expanses unique to the entire Apennine chain. its always hard to encounter, the elusive wildcat, wolves and Marsican bears, seeing them is indeed a rare bonus. They... More

Untouched end unspoiled countryside. We were there during the fall period and spent two great days of driving and walking thru amazing lots of shady forests with variety of reddish, green, yellow end even white colors.

I have just come back from a holiday in the Abruzzo region, Italy and can honestly say this is one of Italy's hidden gems! Amazingly beautiful landscapes and not hugely touristy which is exacting what I wanted. I went on a Gastronomy holiday with a firm called Frui (www.frui.co.uk). They had been recommended to me by a friend who had... More

My parents live in Palombaro and so Paso Di Lanciano is only a 40 min drive into the mountains. We decided to take our 3.5 year old and 1.5 year old up for the day and to organise a starter ski lesson for our oldest. What a perfect day. The resort is so small and friendly with a handful of... Picinisco is one of the main entrances to the Park. From there visit Prato Di Mezzo and make the ascent to Monte Meta to see the Adriatic and the tyrhenian Seas as well as Ischia. Best guides to be found in Picinisco. Bears, deer, wolves, foxes, wild boar, eagles and lost more to be seen.

We rented a car and visited most of the small towns in the Province of Abruzzo. Fantastic! If you love mountains and scenery, cheap food and vino, this is the place to go! People are so nice! When in the little villages, just ask where's the best place to eat cheap and surely someone will guide you. Also visited Pacentro,... More
