Very moving

The building where famous and beloved Totò was born and lived until he was 24, when he moved with his family to Rome, is located in Rione Sanità, a poor neighborhood in Naples. The building is in a very bad state and could really be the definition of the word “poor”. While looking at the building, we met a local neighbor who was very helpful and started talking to us and showing around. We even went upstairs (obviously not entering the apartment). The man also said that they were supposed to open this site to the public and put a basket for donations. The plan changed because of the pandemic. I sincerely liked to be standing there, it’s quite a moving experience and honestly you could feel more where the actor was born and grew up (the original conditions and everything) but I understand what the majority of reviewers are saying about the shameful state of the building. It would be nice to know and see that the city respected and cared enough to make this building more decent.

Antonio De Curtis Griffo Focas Comneno Gagliardi, principe di Bisanzio a.k.a. Totò in spite of his noble origin, was born in this flat and lived there until the age of 24. He was one of the masterpiece of the Neapolitan comedy both in theater and on movie. His characters represent the poor neapolitan people who know the art of tricks just to survive to misery. The house is small and located into a old building. There should be a museum devoted to him, but when I was there only the stairs and his door were accessible. The people love Totò today more than yesterday but the authorities do not care too much about it. Sometime, they promise a museum and even more, but at the end they do little or nothing. In order to visit his house, I would like to suggest a guided tour, indications are missing and it is too easy to get lost in the numerous lanes of the neighborhood that sometime, may be even unsafe.
