This is yet another extraordinary example of a building that remained relatively intact. Of course Romans wanted their clothes to be cleaned and dyed or redyed and this was a typical example. Incredible to see the colour of the wall decorations still there

So interesting to see and to know how laundry was done by slaves and what was used (urine). Interesting that the building is still intact.

There was a number of laundries (fullonicae) in Pompeii. This fact is well-documented. The Fullonica of Stephanus is the only one which wasn't built as a fullonica but originally was a private house rebuilt later to form a laundry. This explains the presence of rich wall decorations in some of its rooms as well as the layout of a private... More

So, Roman customers wanted their clothes washed, dyed/re-dyed and this was the place go come to in all of Pompeii - literally the only place. The owner made a fortune out of it. If only one could pay off ill-fortune...

As we walked around this world heratige site , we found many wonders that , invoked many images of days gone by, this was in very good condition considering how old it was , And the storm that had covered it. As we walked around the ruins , the overall condition of the site , was a testimony to the... More

Still with some of the better wall paintings which have survived, this was quite easy to imagine as a busy place of work, with the vast at the rear nicely preserved though it can't have been a pleasant job to do.

The stories of Pompeii can't be completely told unless you are with a guide. And this is one that is fascinating.... a story of urine used to clean & dye clothing, a business owner who died trying to preserve what he had. Tragedy, history, pathos. One of the many fascinating stories of Pompeii.

This man was truly an entrepeneur ...Used pee form people off the street to dye the cloth..amazing..and I think he died with bags of money in his hands whilst trying to flee the anger of Mt. Vesuvius !!

Each of the sights at Pompeii are so special from the perspective of preserving history of everyday life in the ancient city. The Fullonica Di Stephanus is a laundry shop, which just by itself is notable. Has washing basins & vats present in a very organized manner. Fascinating. ...
