A big place with monumental buildings, a generous palace...After they visited the beautiful city of Bologna, the tourists stop on San Petronio basilica stairs and watch all this beautiful architectural ensemble. The statue of Neptune dominates its center.

We had trouble finding the tourist office but it is in the main square! If you use the Welcome Card - good value, it is worth using the included walk/tour.

Large piazza in the centre of the city full of locals and tourists-the imposing Neptune's Fountain (being renovated at time of visit) is just one of many many historic masterpieces to enjoy including the Basilica of San Petronius

We spent the "Capodanno 2017" at the Piazza Maggiore and it was a wonderful experience. The square was crowded by people of all ages. At midnight a huge puppet soldier “L’Ussaro” was set on fire. The only negative thing was that the big clock on the tower was 2 minutes late so if you paid attention to the clock you... More

The famous Neptune statue is under renovation. We didn't even know we missed it until we looked at map and realized the big covered part was it just after the Christmas tree. The rest of the square is huge with Basilica on one side. New Years eve there are DJ's playing, lights and the Burning Man at midnight. Note -... More

you can't possibly miss this one place in Bologna. It's, of course, one of the landmarks of the city, favoured both by locals and tourists. Good for taking a stroll, people watching, and as a starting place for easy access to many buildings and sites (Palazzo del Podesta, San Petronio etc).

My advice: Read Travel Guide on this great place in Bologna and what all is around, then visit Piazza Maggiore. For good photos during day, bright weather is optimal, but also night scenes are magical with the illuminations all around.
