...this is a fun stop. There only one english handout, and it has the least interesting info. We walked up from the restaurant Balzi Rossi, and it made a nice post-prandial outing on a sunny and mild winters day.

Away from the beating track, dates back to pre-historic times and gives a different perspective to the area.

Nestled at the base of reddish, sheer cliffs in northern Italy and within 50 meters of the French border is this excellent small museum and outdoor field area which mainly comprises sea caves, two of which are accessible and were inhabited from about 200,000 years ago. The site itself is picturesque with views west along the dramatic coastline but the... More

Located in a small village near the border of France, it can easily be missed. It was actually a very small museum but quite impressive and amazing. A good education for the children but needs an English translation because all the information is in Italian. The caves had a good view of the sea, no wonder the cro- magnon people... More

About 2 km from Menton-garavan, just after having passed the Italian border. The museum is beautifully located and just the landscape around is worth a visit. Opening hours: 8:30 - 19:30. Closed on Monday. The caves have different opening hours (you may check first). Entry ticket: EUR 4 including the visit and the tour if you can get it. Only... More

Very interesting, but would be more so if we knew what we were looking at. Great view from the caves. It cost 4 Euro per person.

The Balzi Rossi caves are located between Menton in France and Ventimiglia in Italy. When we arrived at the museum, it turned out that you only could pay with cash, not with a bank- or credit card. Entree fee was only a few euros per person, but we did not have cash on us at that moment. Because we wanted... More

As we were staying in a nearby apartment in the Garavan section of Menton, it was nothing more than a one-kilometer casual walk for us to walk across the Italian border and into a parking lot leading to the entry of this museum. The entry fee has now been doubled to four Euros (they are still using the original two-Euro... More

Museo dei Balzi Rossi consists of two small buildings with expositions on human pre-history (unfortunately mostly in Italian with little English) and three pre-historic caves of moderate interest (some minor cave art which is hardly decipherable). Still, it's an interesting place for a human history buff. Two things to note: a) the museum is near the beach so don't walk... More
