Well here you see the tomb with the bones of Saint Augustinus (4th century) of the "Confessions", who really introduced the idea of "original sin" into catholic theology. The outside of this romanic church is decorated with a few round ceramic dishes, which partly originated in Muslim countries , some have even Arabic inscriptions. Times have changed.

At first glance, you may think that this is just one ordinary church. The name of the church, San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro (St. Peter in Golden Sky), refers to the mosaics of gold leaf behind the glass tesserae, decorating the ceiling of the apse. However, the mosaics seem not very well maintained and give the impression that the splendour of this church had faded throughout the centuries. Nonetheless, the richness of this church is not in the appearance but the treasures within. You can find the tombs of St. Augustine of Hippo and a lesser known philosopher, Boethius, here. There should not be many tourists around as well, which will give you the quiet space and time to yourself.

Located just 7 minutes with the train from Pavia, this marvelous monastery will leave no one unimpressed. It is huge and offers a wide variety of scenes and art to admire. The architecture is also like sth out of a fairytale. The walk from the train to the church is also very picturesque and worth the while.

It's a bit of a walk since it's not really located in the centre of Pavia, but it was worth it. Beautiful church, not too many visitors so it still was silent. The crypt is also open to visitors. The mosaic above the altar is beautiful.

Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, located at the northern end of the city. Yet another great example of Romanesque architecture, it has been famous throughout history and being mentioned both by Dante and Boccaccio in their literature. Inside, in the chancel, is located a beautiful 14th-century gothic sculpture in Carrara marble named the Arch of St Augustine, which supposedly keeps the remains of the saint.

This Basilica had a breath-takingly beautiful golden mozaic above the alter and was definitely worth visiting.

This is a beautiful place I strongly recommend to visit if you are in Pavia. This small church keeps the remains of Saint Augustin and Boetius. you may find also the tomb of the first king of Longobards Liutprando. If you are on the Via Francigena here you can receive a stamp for your credentials.

Pavia has some wonderful churches. San Pietro in Ciel d'oro is one of the prettiest, with lovely internal decoration and a long history. Note the celtic designs on the front portico.

his was more strict about covering legs than all others in Pavia. We arrived in shorts on a 34 degree day. However it is an Romanesque delight and worth going back to get a cover-up
