The castle is set in a park a short walk from the center of town and university. Permanent exhibition of Longobard art in the main building and temporary art exhibitions all year long in the former stables of the castle. Big courtyard. Good for a day trip from Milan (30 minutes train ride).

Wow - what an experience! The ancient artwork was incredible. Just putting the age of the art into perspective was mind blowing. The huge spaces of the castello itself was amazing. When we were there they were setting up for an opera to be performed - which would have been fabulous to attend.

By far the coolest thing I saw in Pavia. The size and age are amazing with great gardens and a cool moat surrounding it.

I am giving 3 points only because of the realy bad service in this beautiful medieval castle, It really would be worth visiting, however we had a feeling that the local people did not care at all. Nobody was speaking English, they did not even try, the castle did not seem to be maintained properly, it was quite messy, there was... More

Place is a very nice castle located very near the city center. The visit to the castle as well as the art collection is very interesting (still conservation could be improved). The area inside the castle (gardens) are perfect to admire the whole construction and admire the style.

The castle itself is "unfinished": only three sides having been completed. The north wall is in ruin, and it was a ruin as early as the mid-500's, as shown in the fresco of the city inside the church of S. Teodoro (reviewed elsewhere). But what a building! The details of the brickwork are stunning and well preserved/restored. The stairs and... More

The museum is really a collation of several units, over three levels and under one roof (and one admission ticket). They consist of a small collection of archeological remains, a largish pinacoteque from late gothic to late 19th century, a small ensemble of romanic and renaissance architectural sculptures, and a section for the history and art of the Italian "risorgimento"... The castle is beautiful, but it could be better preserved. Anyway it is interesting to be visited. The exposition that has been announced was about Monet, but it was disapointing. Practically no important Monet paintings, some few from his daughter done at Giverny and some multimedia about him. The entrance prices were high for the level of the exhibition. So,... More

Beautiful castle, nice exhibition ,difficulty to talk to somebody English. Nice people , staff. Environmental control very bad. Very hot inside, what perhaps is not good for the artwork and staff to survive.

Though less magnificent than the Sforzesco castle in Milan, it is an interesting view in Pavia worthwhile strolling in the gardens and the museum. There is also a nice playground where children can rest (and play). Often the castle stables host interesting exhibition. Before (or after your visit) read the Maria Bellonci book "Tu, vipera gentile" which in english sounds... More
