The Buonconsiglio Castle is the largest and most important monumental complex of the Trentino Alto Adige region. It was the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento from the 13th century to the end of the 18th century, and is composed of a series of buildings of different eras, enclosed by walls and positioned slightly higher than the city. Castelvecchio is the oldest nucleus, dominated by an imposing cylindrical tower; the Magno Palazzo is the 16th century expansion in the Italian Renaissance-style as commissioned by the Prince-Bishop and Cardinal Bernardo Cles (1485-1539); the Baroque-style Giunta Albertiana dates from the end of the 17th century. At the extreme south of the complex is the Torre Aquila, within which is conserved the famous Cycle of the Months, one of the most fascinating secular pictorial cycles of the late Middle Ages.

This is a beautiful castle about a 10-minute walk from the centre. Large complex, with different sections added over the years. It's free to walk around the gardens & walls, but there is a charge for entering the main part of the castle (and extra tickets for some special areas). Built higher than the surrounding area, so some good views.

Huge castle with lots or art and artifacts as well as an audio tour of a tower with beautiful tapestries. Great views of the Dolomites from here as well.

An easy to get to castle, €10/- per ticket. Consist of the old part of the castle and some additions over the years. Used by many historic nations and councils in the past. The views are good and some of the areas are still well-frescos. Entry to the tower to view the frescos is separate and is highly recommended.

On the top part of Trento city you will find this enchanting castle with many secrets to share. Once inside you will be able to feel as part of the époque and recreate in your mind what it must have been to live within this fortress; it has been so well maintained that for a moment it seems that time... Bounconsiglio is a beautiful work in progress. A beautiful castle, it is steeped in history but the beating it has taken throughout time shows. The frescoes are slowly being repaired, Many areas are still off limits but the permanent exhibits are amazing. Each room is a statement to different architectural periods, baroque, rococo, etc. You can see how each influence... More
