So glad I saw it. Was on my list. Like going back in time - the art work is beautiful. The whole place is magnificent.

This is a truly spectacular place to visit when in Venice. We decided to take a look around and were truly in awe at it's beauty. To enter the main part is free and then certain parts inside are charged for but only a couple of euros. The most expensive part is 5 euros and that's to go on to... More

Visited June 2016 before a cruise, the lineup looks long but moves pretty fast. Ladies, make sure your shoulders/tummy are covered up or they will give you a shawl to wear! It is breathtaking inside, definitely worth seeing. They do not allow photography so you need to be stealthy and no flash.

There really are no words to describe the sublime beauty of Basilica San Marco - it is a world treasure and should not be missed! We have visited on two occasions - once in 2011 and again in 2016. We could have spent hours taking in the arresting details. On both occasions, we went to the 9:00 a.m. mass on... More

If you have no time to see anything else, this is the main stop of Venice - and the amount of tourists reflects that. If possible, obtain tickets in advance. Best hours are in the afternoon, when the crowds thin a little (only a little). Dress code is enforced, especially for women. I saw several men on shorts (knee length)... More

I am not sure how many movies throughout the ages that have featured San Marco / the plaza but seeing this in the movies is nothing to the feeling one gets when then round the corner and come out to the plaza and see San Marco it's breath taking.

Don't miss the little museum hidden upstairs - staircase as you go in. The main hall is beautiful and golden. Incredible works of art and worth going to see the room off to the right that's full of relics and artworks.

On our 'walk' around Venice, came across this wonderful Basilica. Very Old paintings. Wonderful stained glass windows at alter, letting in plenty of light. Interesting Church.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
