I took so many pictures of the front of this church. It is gorgeous. We did not go inside, but the outside is well worth a good long look. I was quite sorry that I couldn't get up to eye level with all the statues. I don't mean climbing up the building as that is simply a horrible idea -I... More

The outside of this church is awe inspiring. Seeing as I was staying in the hotel next door, I had to go inside for a look. To be honest, apart from a rare Rubens picture, I struggle to remember much else. Maybe it was the end of a long day!!

This church has an admission charge and so I decided against entering (since there are so many churches which one can enter for free). The exterior is quite ornate and can be admired in its own right.

This church was on our route: the Rubens enticed us in, and we found so much more. The church still has the atmosphere of a place of worship, lost in so many that house great art; the Veronese behind the altar can be appreciated from afar, as can the Tintorerttos around the organ; the Rubens is worth seeing, although it... Originally founded in the 800's, this church underwent an extensive renovation in the 1680's. Funding for this effort was made possible by a bequeathment made by aristocrat and Venetian Admiral Antonio Barbaro who died in 1679. The architect honored this benefactor by installing the Admiral's sculpture front and center, above the door. The four brothers of the Admiral stand in... More

The interior of the church, better know as Santa Maria Zobenigo is more ornate with a few paintings by Tintoretto. If you buy a chorus pass you can get into this church free of charge.

The Baroque styled beautiful facade does not have any Christian image statues or reliefs. It shows the marble relief maps of various places in which Antonio Barbaro served, including Candia, Zadar, Padua, Rome and Corfu. His own statue is there on the marble facade

While I understand that churches need to pay for their upkeep 3 euros is to much to demand from people. It is very impressive from the outside and inside has the usual beautiful frescoes that most Venetian churches have, save your money and go to another and donate to the upkeep of that one!

The exterior has stunning architecture. On entering, you'll see an equally stunning interior with incredible frescoes, painting and statutes. Then the 3 euro admission fee is too high. I don't mind my contribution/donation for its restoration and upkeep, the admission fee just seemed too high. Too many other stunning churches that are free or wth a donation box.

Thank SanMo

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
