Venetian cemetery, very surreal, calm and peaceful, chapels, stone inscriptions, sculptures. One vaporetto line.

I do like to visit a cemetery! Taking the short trip across the lagoon to San Michele is part of the experience. Locals are on 'the bus' with flowers to tend their loved ones graves. The island is beautiful and peaceful and tells its own...More

This island has very calm residents. It is place for dead and memory. Graves, places for urns, memorial chapels, stone and inscriptions, some sculptures, mainly plastic flowers and candles. It can be very surreal, even bizarre. It is not as the other spots in Venice....More

We were passing and so took a look in, as with so many of the amazingly beautiful churches in Venice they take your breath away.

The Venetian cemetery is worth a trip even if you hadn't planned on leaving the main island grouping of Venice. The church, the famous grave sites and the island itself are all lovely. I would recommend this for a sunny day -not necessarily hot- but...More

Get a water bus over from the Fondamente Nove to this little island, which is the cemetery of Venice. It is beautifully arranged, extremely neat and well maintained. Altogether really peaceful. You can see tombs of writers, musicians, and the ordinary local people side by...More

The only place in Venice we hadn't visited. Puts us to shame when it comes to our cemeteries. A beautifully kept, peaceful island. All graves have flowers and are well looked after. Soo peaceful. No photos and must be dressed appropriately when visiting. If there...More

If you are not terrified of being in a cemetery, and you are interested in Italian sculptures and gardens - you will like the Venetian cemetery island. I found it very interesting to see the big family tombs, the statues and the beautiful flowers.

We were keen to stop here before we got to Venice and on our way over to Murano in the afternoon, got off the vaporetto for a walk around. The island is quite spectacular - not sure there is an island cemetery of comparison anywhere...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Is the cemetery open every day? We are going in August. Should you book a tour or can you take the water taxi and explore by yourself? Thank you.

Yes it is open every day. You can reserve water taxi. I don't know about the tour. I went alone without any guide except guide book.
Does anyone know the name/use of the orange square building to the right hand side of the church on San Michele Island? It has two large archways on the water side. Would love to see photos of these archways from the inside looking out across the water. Thanks.

Sorry I don't know the answer to your question. We didn't take any photos on the island it seemed disrespectful. I'm sure you could find some information on the internet.
