The most divine church

We sat for hours just looking up at the ceiling. Even. Y three teenage children were enthralled with this little hidden gem.

What makes someone memorable is not just what they have done but what is recorded. This is the resting place of Marco Polo who traveled extensively throughout Asia. The site was not open to the public when we were there.

Truly spectacular ceiling painting. If you only visit one church in Venice, this must be the one. Need 50 cent coin to turn lights on. Best money ever spent.

I spent 16 days traveling Italy by train, out of all the museums, churches & and historic ruins we saw, this churches interior still stood out to me. We started in Venice and after 16 days I can honestly say the painted ceiling in this church was the best i saw. There is something very powerful about it and i... More

This ceiling and the entire interior of this building is absolutely incredible. To think that such magnificent things were created so long ago is amazing. I could have sat for hours finding new detail in the ceiling.. Top spot to visit.

We were told this is the largest church ceiling painting in the world, I'm not sure if that is true but it sure is impressive and definitely the largest we have seen. The artist fell to his death from the scaffolding in 1704, while he was finishing this masterpiece. The Coronation of the Virgin is also breathtaking and worth the... More

The ceiling of this church is beyond belief. How could anyone not to be impressed by it. The artist spent over 20 years painting it and I for one thank him for his dedication.

There are many richly decorated churches in Italy, and I didn't notice this church as a tourist destination. But I passed it by and the door was open, so I hopped in, and I was amazed by the rich interior decoration. I'm glad I saw it.

I wouldnt have given this place a thought if it wasnt for my fabulous walking tour. This is a true hidden gem and a treat for the eyes. We both, with my 10 year old son, stood with our mouths gaping at the ceiling and all its' beauty. A lovely quiet area with lots of other delights, sights and cafes.... More

It was just mentioned while on our walking tour and when we took a break 5 min later, we went back to see what it was all about. It is this small church with no façade on it, but inside it was this awesome ceiling frescoe. They ask for a donation for entrance and I thought it was cool. It's... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
