Whalebones!

A whale rib bone hanging from the archway high above the street. Worth a look if you are in the area.

This monumental arch provides an entrance to Piazza dei Signori coming from Piazza del Erbe. I never would have noticed the whale bone hanging from the arch if I hadn't read about this detail. It appears to be a rib and has been suspended there since at least the mid-1700s. Stories abound about why the bone is there and whether... More

This archway has a whale rib hanging from it, that legend states will fall on the first honest person to walk underneath it. Didn't move a jot for me, so it must be defective ;) Piazza delle Erbe is a great place to visit, a very beautiful Piazza with loads of nice bars to have a drink and people watch.... More

I was told it's an artifact brought back by Crusaders in Medieval time. It's some kind of whale bone. It's very easy to miss because it's high up on the gate.

There are more attractive archways in Verona. This one separates the two piazzas and is next to the museum / art gallery. I wouldn't make a special trip to see this, but if you're in Verona anyway, you'll probably be going to Piazza Erbe, and you can't miss it.

From piazza della erbe to piazza del signori this is the arch you pass through. I hadnt realised it was a whalebone hanging from the arch until i read other people's reviews, thanks for that, there is no info board nearby explaining the significance. Take a look up as you pass under.

Legend has it that the whale bone will fall on the head of the first person to walk through who has never told a lie...maybe that's why Pinocchio is so symbolic here?! Verona does love a good story, and that's all the archway really is, but you'll definitely pass through Piazza Delle Erbe, so it's worth a "nose"...

Arches arches everywhere. This has a unique pattern of brickwork that we have only seen in Verona. If you go to Erbe, you will see the arch, just watch for it. Two for 1! Piazza Erbe is the key, you definitely want to see that market, and once you are there, well, just watch for the arch!

The arch is in the Piazza delle Erbe. There is a whales rib suspended underneath and that is it. Nice to see and for a pic but then move on.

Not something you see everyday-a whale's rib suspended from an arch in Verona, just off the Plaza delle Erbe. But hey, if you find yourself in Verona, you might as well check it out! Best viewed from the Plaza delle Erbe side in the afternoon.
