Assisi and Cortona Day Trip from Florence

126 reviews
Take a day trip to Assisi and Cortona and discover these charming hilltop towns alongside a guide. Departing from Florence, travel first to Assisi, where you visit the Convent of Santa Chiara, the Basilica of San Francesco, and hear about the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Pause for a peek inside Santa Maria degli Angeli church, believed to be a favorite spot of St. Francis. Then head to Cortona for some time to explore independently before returning to Florence.

Constant Companion and I visited Cortona along with our culinary group. It is an Etruscan town almost 2000 feet high up on a hill. All of its streets, except one, are very steep and narrow! There are several sites worth visiting, including Chiesa San Francisco, Duomo di Cortona, Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza Signorelli, and Bramasole made famous in Frances Mayes' "Under the Tuscan Sun". We were impressed by all but were particularly fond of Chiesa San Franciso due to its fragment of the Holy Cross and relics(habit and death cushion) of St. Francis of Assisi!

I found this church fascinating. There is a relic of the Holy Cross on the alter, encased behind glass. You can walk right up on the alter and touch it. A very moving and spiritual experience. There are items, including a tunic, that belonged to St. Francis of Assisi encased in a display case. The church is simple with beautiful artwork and wooden ceilings. A must see in Cortona.
