Bus Tour

This Church was a stop on a bus tour. Beautiful and a must see while traveling in Italy. The lines were not long to get in and the photos we were able to take were amazing.

A very large church so allow plenty of time to see all the different zones. It's nice to sit and take it all in, there are benches out front

A tiny but beautiful church on a square. There is a visitor center in the square that facilitates tours to Tuscan vineyards and La Cinque Terre.

The Santa Maria Novella is a lovely church in the heart of florence city. Accessible easily on foot from the railway station this building is a true marvel. It has a very unique architecture and quite different from any other churches that you may have seen. A must visit if you are visiting florence

Some areas os the church specially in the cloister are under reconstruction due to subsequent floods. Some frescos are being recovered. Disappointing visit in comparison with Santa Croce.

The more famous Duomo is massive and decorative from the outside, but this smaller church is much more inspiring inside. It has beautiful windows, paintings, and frescoes. It is a gem.

This 13th century Dominican church surprised us with the wide array of art that varied from Giotto and Brunelleschi as well as the outside features of Romanesque (horizontal stripes), Gothic (pointed arches), and Baroque (characteristic scrolls). For only 5 Euros and no lines, you get to see beautiful art and architecture that tell the story of this great area.

Wander through this lovely church and take in the beautiful frescos. Take a peek in the magnificent gift shop and visit the cloisters. Well worth the price of admission.

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
