wonderful and free

Found this place by accident while walking through a residential area, but couldn't pass it up.

It's big, beautiful, free, has a museum and book/gift shop, and hosts some of the best views of Florence.

Stunning views
Oct 2019
This is rambling old fort with no outstanding features except for the stunning views. When we were there they had a very interesting sculpture exhibition. If you have the time for a stroll up and back meandering through Florence then yes it is a pleasant overall experience. If time is of the essence then do other more exciting attractions in stunning Florence

Amazing view

Start by taking a taxi to top of Forte di Belvedere, see that, then from exit of Forte, enter the garden (you’ll need to buy a garden ticket separately from the Forte admission).

We didn't go see the exhibit in the Fort but worth the money to see the view of Florence around the Fort - Then walk down to the Boboli Gardens and bring some wine and cheese

It could be very good

The site is wonderful, with a cultural component and a fantastic panoramic view of the city. However, the vigilante group makes a point of making people feel in a concentration camp. With an horrible and even intimidating posture, they prevent the experience from being very good.

In 11 years of annual visits to Firenze I had not yet been to Forte Belvedere!
Sep 2019
This is a relatively uncrowded place compared to many other major sights in Firenze. It offers some of the best views of the city, which makes sense given its historical function as a defensive fortification designed to allow for watching for approaching enemies. It is lovely to stroll around the upper fortifications and there are often additional shows of contemporary art. This time it was large bronze sculptures of animals. It is a little bit of a walk, either up the steep walk from San Niccolo below or from the major road above. This probably accounts for how few tourists we saw at a time when the centre of Firenze was mobbed. (Usually my visits in late August have been quiet even in the city centre as most Italians are on holiday at the seaside. But this time it was surprisingly crowded.) Spend a couple of hours enjoying the views and perhaps also the nearby Boboli and Bardini gardens. Then saunter down the hill for a lovely lunch in San Niccolo.

Stunning location but very poorly managed
Aug 2019 • Couples
We were really pleased when we arrived at the Fort. It affords amazing views of Florence and also being high above the city provided a welcome breeze on a hot day.
However, it is one of the most bizarrely managed places I have ever visited. There are many smartly dressed men and women in a blue uniform patrolling the area, ready to pounce if you are doing anything they don’t like. In our case, this included sitting on the grass, putting a bag on the wall, sitting on an outside wicker sofa and not ordering from an unimaginative expensive menu immediately and resting one of my feet on a bar at the base of a coffee table (I didn’t put my foot on the table itself). They are curt and rude.
There were no signs explaining the historical environment or the ‘rules’ customers - we paid an entry fee - had to follow.
Had the staff been more polite and less police like, we would have stayed much longer and spent quite a bit at the restaurant/ bar.
Such a pity as the experience could have been so wonderful.

Best kept secret of Florence
Aug 2019 • Friends
Walking around Florence we stumbled upon the fort and gardens...we were shocked that very few tourists were here. The views are SPECTACULAR and we enjoyed drinks at the top of the fort. Then we went into the garden and palace and they were beautiful and WELL WORTH the small fee for admittance. I am so grateful we accidentally found this gem.

Historic but not informative

This seemed to be an old military fort. However there was not signage explaining anything or where to go. Made old rooms into art galleries and not like a National site In US. Not even worth the 3 euros to get in. Too bad as looked like they could have done a lot
