Relative to the other churches in Siena and in Italy in general, the interior of the Basilica di San Domenico is not particularly ornate or memorable (other than the crypt of Saint Catherine). Many of the stained glass windows, for example, have been replaced with...More

This basilica is not ornate or memorable except for the side altar which houses the head (relic) of St Catherine of Siena. Her actual body remains in Rome but her head with clay mask and actual teeth visible is enshrined here in Siena. Masses are...More

This large brick church was so plain and to be honest unkept around the church. But once you go inside you will see Siena's 17 Contrada flags. You will see everyday people coming in to pray and mediate. In the chapel, surrounded by candles you...More

St Catherine's Basilica is an impressive structure located on a prominent hill in Siena. We started our walking tour at the Basilica and it was wonderful to hear the rich history of the church. St. Catherine's relics are located within the Basilica as are some...More

Large basilica overshadowed by the more famous Duomo in Siena. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but quite beautiful on the inside. Worth a trip here if you have time in the city.

Very large basilica with wide open space. Interning paintings line the walls. But the main attraction that will draw people are the remains of St. Catherine of Siena. In a small side chapel they have her preserved head and finger.

Went to San Domenico as part of a guided tour round Siena. The church itself is so bound up with the history of Siena, especially their patron saint. There's a huge expanse when you enter, but you can wander round as long as no photo's...More

What was interesting about this church is that relics of St Catherine (her head & her thumb) is stored in this church. Also behind this church is a good spot to take great shots of Siena Cathedral.
