We read of this space and were particularly interested in seeing the medieval gardens so we went prepared with picnic for a long visit. Lonely planet made no mention of the fact that picnicking is not allowed and the restaurant was not open. Alas! the medieval gardens were closed to the public on the day of our visit and we... More

When visiting Siena every family or group of tourists must spend at least a few hours in this lovely green space. Completely tranquil it boasts a range of animals including free-roaming peacocks. It's literally 3 minutes walk from the main square and reserves a look.

Nice and tranquil place to rest your ears and enjoy the magnificent small park with goats, peacocks and a funny metal head which looks like something from the ending of planet of the apes. A very reasonably priced restaurant with fine basic food is there.

If you get behind the Palazzo Pubblico, there is an old marketplace and a breathtaking view of Orto de Pecci, which is a real urban oasis. With the town on the hills the Orto is in a super green valley, looking like a renaissance painting. It's a nice walk down from the city, and there is a small reconstruction of... More

This was a lovely surprise! Walking down behind the Piazza del Campo, and past the Piazza del Mercato, you come to this gorgeous patch of nature. There are lots of lovely gardens, and when we were there, lots of trees blossoming. We didn't eat in the restaurant (which looked packed) but just had a nice time walking and taking photos,... More

Not for unfit. Going downhill is OK but going back is a problem. It is out of Siena crowds, pizza is good and reasonable priced but all the fuss about nature is overrated. Couple of peacock screaming all the time.

An amazing cooperative-run community garden with restaurant and farm with orchards, herbs, and animals like peacocks and donkeys and adorable goats, just in the shadow of Siena's city hall.

A good place to eat is in the garden behind the Piazza del Mercato, at the back of the Piazza del Campo. The restaurant is called All'orto dei Peci,Via Porta Giustizia, 39, tel: 0577 222201, 9.00am 10.30pm. It is a simple local cuisine with very good value for money. In the summer you can sit outside in the garden, amidst... More

When you do find the All'Orto de' Pecci you'll be amazed that this huge park / green space really does exist in crowded & jam packed Siena - it's like Central Park in New York. The area has walks, animal exhibits, greens and a restaurant within. Only about 5 minutes from Il Campo and a world away in serenity. ...

Not exactly the most welcoming spot (no pic-nic!) in town but a remarkable haven of green away from the other tourists and a very different perspective / view back to the town. Make a visit - just don't get catch with your own sandwiches!
