Roman Columns

Spectacular Roman columns so well preserved in a beautiful square. Hides a church which was built well afterwards as these must be 2000 years old.

Although hiding a Catholic church behind the columns this magnificent structure is but the tip of the iceberg of what lays underground (which you can also visit). The age and durability of this structure just made us say "wow".

Roman temple preserved beautifully (at least the facade) by being converted to use as a Christian church. Worth stopping to examine

The history of this Roman temple is amazing! This is a must see when you are in Assisi! Be sure to see the rendition of the original roman piazza before the medieval Assisi was built around it.

A wonderful afternoon walking among the Roman ruins in the foundations of Temple Minerva. Loved that work is ongoing to preserve these amazing relics of the past...

We were looking mainly for the Basilica of San Francesco and wandered across this temple. The outside is impressive, and the inside is quite lovely, and you can explore the forums that lie beneath.

How "Pantheon" like to see! Although I need more research it was one of my Assisi highlights. Can't wait to show my husband!

The original temple has been taken over and converted into a church, but the old roman forum is visible in the museum that lies under the main square. It's amazing how much has been excavated and can be explored while modern life continues overhead. Models show how the old forum was set at a lower level than the temple, and... More

This is a good stop in town if you are interested in all of the history of Assisi. Rick Steve's has an audio tour on his app of Assisi that is very good.

the outside is 100% classic roman, the inside 100% italian baroque, be ready for a contrast - worth seeing
