It is the main street of Assisi. Of course Assisi is a very touristic place and therefore the street is full of shops but I have to say that in general the medieval atmosphere is conserved.

This is a nice street to walk through town between the center of town and the basilica. It has shops, restaurants, businesses, and presumably homes. A good slice of Assisi.

Assisi felt very safe and this was a nice place for a stroll, to get gelato and browse the shops. We were two middle age women and we never had any problems, always felt safe. One comment on Assisi in general is to beware of the steps. There are many, many stairs to go anywhere in Assisi, which was tiring, even though we were in pretty good shape.

Via San Francesco is the main pedestrian artery that goes from one end of the city and terminates at the basilica. Numerous shops, cafes, and hotels line this street but it also has several key piazzas (Commune and Popolo) that have centuries old and historically important structures lining it. Torre de Popolo, Palazzo Communale, Temple of Minerva to name a few. Suggest walking down and taking a cab or bus back up to the parking area located atop the town. The walk can be especially strenuous as it is uphill all the way and is steep in some areas.

It is the main street to get from the west end of town to Piazza del Comune, starting at the Lower Basilica to Arco del Seminario. Lined with shops, restaurants, and historical and religious buildings, it is a great place to wander. .
