It is one of the most iconic images of Assisi. The view is amazing and it is the perfect way to climb the hill and reach the Basilica. If it is the first time in Assisi be sure to arrive to the Basilica from this road.

Most people believe that Via Portica is the main square below the Basilica. This is incorrect. Via Portica is a short street that changes name to Via Giotto and connects Piazza del Comune with Via Arnaldo Fortini. It is lined on each side with many restaurants and stores. As you climb Via Portica towards the Piazza, you are afforded a very nice view of Torre del Popolo.
