We spent nearly 90 minutes here, but could as easily spent two hours. The lower church does not (by architectural necessity) have the soaring vaulted ceiling of the upper church, but its art work and especially its frescos are spellbinding. The relics of St. Francis...More

I will just say this is an absolutely beautiful basilica to visit. We went without a tour and did not have any problems with enjoying it just as much without paying for a tour.

The late medieval/pre-Renaissance paintings - even for this inartistic person - were genuinely something to behold. We must thank Rick Steve’s Audio App for the very thorough written explanation of the various murals in the Upper Basilica as well as other points of interest in...More

Stunningly beautiful this Basilica is a must see if you are travelling to Italy. The frescoes by Giotto and his school are perfectly preserved and are windows into the period of their creation. Visiting the tomb of St Francis is a moving experience regardless of...More

Besides visiting the Basilica during the day -when most of the tourist are there, I'd highly recommend to visit in the early hours or late evening. It's more quiet and allows you to admire the art and immerse in the true Spirit of St Francis...More

The Basilica embodies the whole atmosphere of Assisi. It oozes tranquility and peace - the meassage of San Francesco. The Basilica was full of treasures, but the greatest was the tomb of San Francesco. A very spiritual experience.
