We visited the basilica towards the end of the day. We certainly needed a couple of hours to go around and do the artwork and the spirituality of the place justice. Downstairs is the nearest contemporary image of St Francis, it gives a sense of...More

Would not forget the story of San Francesco. I did not have enough information and knowledge before I visit - but I was amazed by the stories of San Francesco and also the Giotto's paintings!

We visited the Basilica with the help of a tour guide--which I highly recommend. The art inside the upper and lower Basilica would be interesting to look out but not comprehend able without the guide.

This Bascillica is an absolute "must see"! Free entry. The frescos are gorgeous. We went down to the crypt of St Franscis. A guide would have been helpful to hear the background and stories but not necessary. We also loved the gift shop that had...More

Even if you are not religious, this is a wonderful place to visit. We had read that the queues would be long, but this was not our experience. As you walked into the Basilica a sense of calm takes over, it is a beautiful building...More
